Looking for that new car, SUV or ute? This list will tell you the top-sellers across their various segments...
The Australian new car market is divided into ‘segments’ by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), making it simpler to work out how a given vehicle is performing against its closest competitors.
With the halfway point of the year well and truly in the rear-view mirror now, it seems like a good time to evaluate which models sit atop each of these segments year-to-date – giving you an insight into the vehicles most favoured by Australians across the board.
The wider new car market is broken up into three subsets called passenger cars (hatchbacks, sedans, wagons, coupes, convertibles, people-movers); SUVs; and light commercials (utes, vans and buses). Within each subset are smaller clusters organised by size and price.
Where appropriate I’ll describe both the premium and mainstream ends of a given vehicle segment, but for smaller-scale corners of the market I’ll combine the two. Also, if any of these segments seem strange to you, blame the FCAI.
