2021 MG ZS price and specs

The increasingly popular MG ZS spawned a family of small SUVs last year, leaving the original model as the brand’s price-leader SUV.

To make room for the more premium ZST, the ZS range received price cuts. It enters 2021 unchanged, with prices starting at $21,990 drive-away.

That means it undercuts its arch-rival and countryman, the Haval H2, which is currently being offered for $22,990 drive-away.

Engines

The 2021 MG ZS is available with two engines.

The base Excite is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 84kW of power and 150Nm of torque. It’s mated to a four-speed automatic transmission.

All other ZS models use a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine with 82kW of power and 160Nm of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

All ZS models are front-wheel drive.

Fuel Economy

The 2021 MG ZS uses 7.1L/100km on the combined cycle with the 1.5-litre and 6.7L/100km with the 1.0-litre.

All models require 95RON premium unleaded fuel and have a 48L fuel tank.

Dimensions

The 2021 MG ZS measures 4314mm long, 1809mm (including the mirrors) and 1620mm tall, or 1644mm including the roof rails. It rides a 2585mm long wheelbase.

Luggage space is 359L from the load bay floor up to the cargo cover. This expands to 1166L with the rear seats folded, with this measurement counting only volume below the window line.

Servicing

The 2021 MG ZS is covered by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty with seven years of roadside assist.

Servicing is required every 12 months or 10,000km, whichever comes first. MG is in the process of rolling out a capped-price servicing scheme.

Safety

The MG ZS has a four-star rating from ANCAP based on testing conducted in 2017.

It received a score of 10.46 out of 16 in the frontal offset crash test, a side impact score of 16 out of 16, and whiplash and pedestrian protection scores of Good and Acceptable, respectively. Its overall score was 31.46 out of 37.

All 2021 MG ZS models come standard with front, front-side and curtain airbags and anti-lock brakes, however there are no active safety features available. To get features like autonomous emergency braking, you’ll need to step up to the ZST.
