Skoda has revealed photos of its next-generation Kodiaq and Superb undergoing extreme winter testing in the Arctic Circle.
The Czech manufacturer says the vehicles, teased in camouflaged form, will be revealed in the northern spring of 2023 (September-November).
Currently, of the two only the Superb is offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, albeit not in Australia. It’s expected both will gain the Volkswagen Group’s new 1.5-litre TSI EVO2 plug-in hybrid powertrain.
This is the most revealing look yet at the fourth-generation Superb. Though it’s wearing camouflage, it appears to have a more angular look than the current car.
The new Superb will continue to offer a range of petrol, diesel and PHEV powertrains, as well as both liftback and wagon bodies.
Recently, Skoda released a photo of the upcoming model in liftback and wagon guise with large pieces of green fabric draped over the top.
The second-generation Kodiaq is expected to take styling cues from the Vision 7S concept that was revealed by the brand in 2022.
However, like the Superb it appears to have a largely evolutionary design language. A previous teaser revealed it will adopt a distinctive new LED daytime running light signature, though.
Both models are expected to wear the Skoda wordmark across their rear ends.
Both models are expected to move to the MQB Evo architecture, which is also used in the Volkswagen Golf, Skoda Octavia and Cupra Formentor.
At this stage, there hasn’t been any word on the interior changes of both models however it’s expected that Skoda’s latest infotainment system will feature.
Both may receive a tablet-style infotainment screen display.
Testing in cold weather allows manufacturers to determine potential engine and mechanical issues in temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees.
Skoda says its recent testing allowed its engineers to ensure the engines turned on without problems in extreme cold weather, and that the doors, windows and charging sockets all opened.
The company also tested the effects of charging in a frozen state.
Skoda has a glut of fresh product coming.
Refreshed versions of the Scala, Kamiq and Octavia are due in Australia in 2024, along with the Enyaq and Enyaq Coupe electric SUVs.
Skoda has also detailed its upcoming range of EVs in Europe. A refreshed Enyaq and Enyaq Coupe are due in 2025, while a new Volkswagen Tiguan-sized model called the Elroq will replace the combustion-powered Karoq in 2024.
