The BMW XM is perhaps the most controversial design from the German carmaker, but a new special edition has given it something it more of something it has arguably lacked: elegance.

BMW has previewed the upcoming XM by Kith – a US fashion brand – with the XM Kith Concept, showcased at Art Basel Miami 2024 alongside Kith founder Ronnie Fieg’s 1981 M1 sports car which was its inspiration.

A total of 47 XM by Kith models will be produced, with just one coming to Australia.

It’ll arrive here around the same time as in other markets, during the second half of 2025. Pricing has yet to be announced.

The special-edition vehicles will be finished in BMW Individual Frozen Techno Violet metallic paint, which was developed specifically for the limited-edition SUV and which BMW claims it will never use again.

If you’re boring, you’ll alternatively be able to opt for BMW Individual Frozen Black.

Regardless of colour, all XM by Kith models will feature black side window graphics and accent strips – no garish gold here.

The outline of the model inscriptions, as well as the Kith logo and the M stripes at the rear, will be finished in Techno Violet metallic.

The special edition will also ride on 23-inch M light-alloy wheels with a Jet Black finish.

Inside, XM by Kith models will feature illuminated door sills with ‘1/47’ on them, as well as velour floor mats and a centre-console control centre emblazoned with the Kith logo and M stripes.

This badging will also be visible, in illuminated form, on the front headrests, while the seats will be finished in BMW Individual Merino leather with an ’embossed Kith monogram pattern’.

In the back, the XM by Kith’s M Lounge rear seats will feature an embossed Kith monogram and personalised cushions, with the cabin bathed with purple ambient lighting.

Unlike the exterior, it appears there’s just one available interior colour: black.

The number of units being produced (47) corresponds with the number of years since the debut of the M1, BMW’s first bespoke M car.

The XM is only the second bespoke BMW M car, but this large SUV couldn’t be any more different from the sports car – though BMW notes the side accent strips, dual rear BMW emblems, and the “louvre structure” of the rear lights are inspired by the M1.

In addition to a special BMW XM, Kith has also launched a BMW collection of apparel and lifestyle products.

XM by Kith models will come with an exclusive Kith duffle bag to accommodate the charging cables.

The Kith collaboration isn’t the first time BMW has shown off a special version of its XM.

The XM Mystique Allure was revealed earlier this year as a one-off show car with a purple velvet interior.

It’s finished in “deeply saturated” ultramarine complete with sequins and velvet. Yes, on the exterior. No, it won’t go into production.

Mr Fieg founded fashion and lifestyle brand Kith in 2011, and the two firms have previously collaborated on special versions of the M4 Competition (in 2020) and i4 M50 xDrive (in 2022).

Like the XM Label Red, the XM by Kith will feature a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain with total system outputs of 550kW of power and 1000Nm of torque.

To the end of November, BMW has sold 124 XMs in Australia this year. That’s more than the Aston Martin DBX (56 units) and Lamborghini Urus (104 sales).
