UPDATED 23/08/2025 08:00am:We’ve updated this article to include the new Dynamic Extended Range announced this month.

The lineup of the BYD Sealion 6, Australia’s best-selling plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV, has continued to evolve during 2025.

After slashing the price of the base Dynamic variant in January by $3000 to $45,990 before on-road costs, making it $1800 cheaper than the most affordable version of the smaller Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV, BYD introduced a new Essential version.

Subsequently, BYD announced in August the new Dynamic Extended Range grade, which features a larger battery than the rest of the lineup for more range.

The range-topping Sealion 6 Premium is unchanged, including its price tag: $52,990 before on-road costs.

Although the BYD Sealion 6 only went on sale in Australia in mid-2024, it became Australia’s top-selling PHEV last year. A total of 6198 examples were delivered, narrowly outselling the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (6126 sales).

The Sealion 6 also cracked the top 20 best-selling vehicles list for the first time in December 2024. A total of 1122 examples were delivered in the month, placing it 18th overall – ahead of established models like the Mazda BT-50 ute (1101 sales) and Hyundai i30 (1066 sales) small car.

Since it launched here in 2024, competition in the mid-size PHEV SUV segment has only become more fierce. The BYD not only has to contend with the stalwart Outlander PHEV, but also new Chinese entrants such as the Super Hybrid versions of the Chery Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 plus the GWM Haval H6 PHEV.
