The 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan has been leaked ahead of its expected reveal this year, showing off its rounder exterior styling.
Images shared on the Facebook group MQB-Coding & Retrofit appear to be leaked photos of the new-generation mid-sized SUV, due in Australia late in 2024.
While we’ve seen revealing spy photos and even an undisguised vehicle during an ad shoot, not to mention official preview images of the interior, this is nevertheless our best look yet at the Tiguan’s exterior.
Gone is the linear crease running down the side of the vehicle and incorporating the door handles. Instead, a crease arches from the headlights and over the front wheel before fading into the front door, while another does the same from the rear door to the tail lights.
It has a more upright silhouette than the ID.4 electric mid-sized SUV, but it’s certainly more curvaceous than the current, boxy Tiguan.
The upper grille appears to be closed off and appears to incorporate a light bar, while the lower grille appears to largely be closed off albeit with a small open area. It’s unclear if there are active shutters.
This example appears to feature matte grey wheel arch extensions, though the Tiguan spied in the film shoot wore gloss black trim instead.
Down back, the tail lights sit within a full-width assembly that also incorporates the Volkswagen logo. A Tiguan wordmark appears at the base of the tailgate.
The interior image is less revealing, given we already knew what the cabin looked like. Nevertheless, we can see from another angle Volkswagen’s new Driving Experience Switch, a rotary knob that can be used to control the drive mode, adjust the stereo volume, and adjust the ambient lighting.
There’s a free-standing central touchscreen which measures up to 15 inches diagonally, while the gear shifter has been moved up near the instrument cluster.
Volkswagen says the touchscreen is in charge of “important functions such as navigation, music and climate control”, but promises it can be “customised with quick access”.
Volkswagen says the cabin will be more premium than ever, with new seats and more sound deadening than before. Those seats will be heated and cooled, and feature massaging as an option.
Under the skin, the Tiguan rides on the MQB Evo architecture underpinning vehicles like the Golf and Skoda Octavia, and will be offered with a selection of diesel, petrol, mild-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid drivetrains.
We understand Volkswagen Australia is pushing for a greater selection of drivetrains to be available Down Under, including the upgraded PHEV system that’s said to offer 100km of EV driving (up from 40km), as well as faster AC charging and new DC fast charging support.
Volkswagen has confirmed the new Tiguan will feature adaptive damping as an option along with a full adaptive dynamics suite that will allow drivers to customise the behaviour of the throttle, steering, and electronic locking differential.
Unlike the current Tiguan, which is available in both short wheelbase and Allspace long wheelbase forms, the new model will only be offered in one size.
Measuring 4551mm long, 1939mm wide, and riding on a 2681mm wheelbase, the third-generation Tiguan is 32mm longer than today’s SWB model, but shares that car’s width and wheelbase.
Volkswagen says luggage space has improved by 33 litres to 648 litres with the rear seats in place, while despite curvier styling the company says it has improved headroom by 10mm in both the front and rear seats.
The Tiguan Allspace is expected to replaced by a new version of the Tayron. Currently the Tayron is a China-exclusive model with distinct styling, and is sized between the SWB and LWB versions of the Tiguan.
