Lexus has detailed the local lineup of its new GX, and while it hasn’t released pricing it has provided some strong hints.
The new body-on-frame SUV is the third generation of GX, a nameplate never offered here that has always been applied to a more luxurious version of the Toyota LandCruiser Prado.
Sharing its platform with the Lexus LX, Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series and the next-generation LandCruiser Prado, the new GX will be exclusively powered by a twin-turbocharged petrol V6 engine in Australia when it lands around mid-2024.
Speaking to CarExpert, Lexus Australia CEO John Pappas said that customers shouldn’t expect a starting price of under $100,000 before on-road costs.
“It’s not going to be under six figures,” he said.
“It’ll probably peak out at under LX too. You’ve got to look at where everything is – it’ll be in between RX and LX.”
Based on that indication, our understanding is that Lexus GX Luxury pricing is expected to start at around $110,000 before on-road costs.
The lineup will kick off with the Luxury, then step up to the Overtrail and cap off with the Sports Luxury.
That places it around the same level as the RX350h Sports Luxury, which is priced at $110,575 before on-road costs. We then expect it to step up to Overtrail and cap out with Sports Luxury at around $150,000 before on-road costs, which should place the Overtrail around $130,000.
For context, Lexus’ larger LandCruiser 300 Series-based LX is priced from $151,561 to $213,561 before on-roads.
The GX’s pricing will pit it up against the Land Rover Defender, which kicks off at $97,970 for the entry-level Defender 110 and finishes at $240,270 before on-roads for the top specification Defender 130 P500 V8.
Given the popularity of the LX, the GX is likely to be a strong seller for Lexus and is expected to launch with an extended waiting list.
