The redesigned Subaru Outback enters its second year with some detail changes.

UPDATE, 16/05/2022 – Subaru Australia has increased the before on-road asking price for the Outback by $800, as part of a wider range price increase.

“Subaru Australia is protecting all existing customer orders as increases in costs associated with production and logistics results in a price adjustment for select Subaru models,” said Subaru in a statement.

“At Subaru Australia, delivering an exceptional customer experience is our priority and all alternatives are explored before any carefully considered price adjustments are implemented.”

The Outback Premium Special Edition is no longer available.

Compared to MY21 models, prices were initially up by $700 in the AWD and AWD Sport and by $1200 in the flagship AWD Touring.

The AWD Touring has received ventilated front seats and a manual thigh extender for the driver’s seat, while all models get a revised seatback pocket design.

Sapphire Blue Pearl replaces Dark Blue Pearl on the colour palette, while the base AWD gets a revised wheel design. Otherwise, the Outback is unchanged.

The Outback might just be the last station wagon that still sells, though despite its wagon-like styling, it has more ground clearance than many more overtly SUV-style rivals.

To the end of November 2021, Subaru has sold 9669 Outbacks, making it the brand’s second best-seller behind the Forester.

Classified as a Large SUV in VFACTS sales reports, the Outback is the third best-seller in its segment after the Toyota LandCruiser Prado and Isuzu MU-X, though the latter is only 164 units ahead.

Engines

All 2022 Subaru Outback models are powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 138kW of power and 245Nm of torque, mated to a continuously-variable transmission and all-wheel drive.

Fuel Economy

Claimed combined fuel economy for the 2021 Subaru Outback is 7.3L/100km.

The car drinks regular 91RON unleaded petrol.

Dimensions

The 2022 Subaru Outback measures 4870mm long, 1875mm wide, and 1675mm tall with the AWD and Touring’s roof rails fixed.

The car’s wheelbase is 2745mm, and the boot space is 522L with the rear seats in place and 1267L with them folded.

Servicing and Warranty

Maintenance is required every 12 months or 12,500km in the Outback, and Subaru offers five years of capped-price servicing.

Safety

The Subaru Outback has a five-star rating from ANCAP, based on testing conducted in 2021. It received an adult occupant protection score of 88 per cent, a child occupant protection score of 91 per cent, a vulnerable road user protection score of 84 per cent, and a safety assist score of 96 per cent.
