Coupe crossovers aren’t the exclusive domain of luxury automakers anymore, as the upcoming Volkswagen ID.5 shows.
Much as the BMW X4 is a coupe version of the X3 SUV, the ID.5 is a coupe version of the ID.4.
That’s evident in the front-end styling, which appears identical, and in the detailing at the rear where the ID.5 uses similar tail lights.
Where they differ is in the roofline. The ID.5 has a sleeker silhouette, a swept-back tailgate, and an interesting, sail-shaped C-pillar treatment. There’s also a unique rear spoiler.
Given its close relation to the ID.4, we should expect to see a similar powertrain range in the ID.5.
The ID.4 will be available with 52kWh or 77kWh lithium-ion batteries, paired with both single- and dual-motor setups.
Rear-wheel drive models with 109kW or 125kW of power will be offered, while all-wheel drive options with 150kW and 225kW will sit above them.
Maximum range for the ID.4 is 520km on the WLTP test cycle.
Sitting atop the range will be a sporty GTX model.
It’ll use a dual-motor all-wheel drive set-up with a total system output of 225kW of power and 459Nm of torque.
That’ll allow it to do the 0-100km/h sprint in 6.2 seconds while still achieving a range of up to 460km from its 82kWh battery.
As on the ID.4 GTX, it’ll be differentiated from regular models through new bumpers, wheel designs and interior trims, plus chassis tweaks, a lower ride height, and more performance-oriented tyres.
The mid-sized ID.4 will be the first Volkswagen electric vehicle to be offered in Australia when it touches down in 2022 or 2023, with the Golf-sized ID.3 hatchback to follow.
The ID.4 and ID.5 slot underneath the upcoming ID.6, a three-row SUV – think of it as the Tiguan Allspace to the ID.4’s Tiguan.
It isn’t clear what nameplate Volkswagen’s upcoming all-electric, Passat-sized sedan and wagon will wear, as it had previously been reported to be ID.6.
The flagship ID. vehicle will reportedly be called ID.7, and will be the production version of the Kombi-inspired ID. Buzz.
The ID.5 won’t be the first coupe crossover from Volkswagen.
Teramont X 
Tiguan X
The company sells a coupe version of the Tiguan in China, badged the Tiguan X.
Likewise, the Teramont/Atlas has a coupe version badged the Teramont X in China and Atlas Cross Sport in North America.
Coupe crossovers from mainstream brands are becoming increasingly common in the Chinese market but remain a rarity elsewhere, though this year we’ll see the local introduction of the Renault Arkana coupe crossover.
