We have a visual I.D. on the next member of the Volkswagen ID. family.
The Volkswagen ID.6 has been leaked thanks to a Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology filing shared by Reddit user Kortoday.
While it looks much like the ID.4 mid-sized SUV, it’s considerably larger.
The ID.6 reportedly measures 4876mm long, 1848mm wide and 1680mm tall on a 2965mm wheelbase.
That’s 291mm longer than an ID.4 and just 2mm shorter than a Touareg, though it’s 136mm narrower than the latter and almost identical in width to the ID.4. In terms of its overall footprint, it’s closer to the likes of the Mazda CX-8.
It has a similar shape to the ID.4, though its headlights and tail lights are larger.
While we don’t yet know if it’ll offer a third row of seating, it seems likely.
That would give Volkswagen a rather unique offering in the electric vehicle market. Currently, the only three-row electric SUVs in markets like Europe and the US are the Tesla Model X and Model Y.
In China, which the ID.6 has been designed primarily for, there are more electric SUV models on offer.
That includes additional seven-seat competition in the form of the Nio ES8.
A production version of the 2019 ID. Roomzz concept, the ID.6 will be based on Volkswagen’s all-electric MEB architecture that also underpins the ID.3 and ID.4.
It’s lost the dual sliding doors of the concept, giving the I.D. Roomzz less of a minivan look.
The ID. Roomzz concept was equipped with an electric motor on each axle, giving it all-wheel drive and a total system output of 225kW.
It used an 82kWh lithium-ion battery pack, with a claimed electric range of 450km on the stricter WLTP standard.
The smaller ID.4 will be available in a dual-motor, all-wheel drive performance variant, also with 225kW albeit with a 77kWh battery.
In Europe, the ID.4 will be initially available with a single drivetrain featuring a rear-mounted 150kW electric motor hooked up to a 77kWh battery pack.
This version of the ID.4 has a 0-100km/h time of 8.5 seconds, with a driving range of 520km using the WLTP standard and 400km under the US EPA’s testing criteria.
Later on the ID.4 will be available in rear-wheel drive with either a 109kW and 125kW motor paired to a 52kWh battery, and a 129kW motor with a 77kWh battery.
Volkswagen has additional large ID. vehicles on the way.
A production version of the ID. Buzz concept will reportedly use the ID.7 nameplate when it launches in 2022.
Production versions of the mid-sized ID. Vizzion and ID. Space Vizzion sedan and wagon will follow and have been mooted to wear ID.6 nameplates.
Considering they’re likely to be introduced in China as well, we expect them to wear a different name.
