Toyota is celebrating 70 years of the LandCruiser with, appropriately, a 70 Series LandCruiser special edition.
The 70th Anniversary special edition is based on the range-topping GXL trim and will be available on both the single cab and double cab utes, plus the wagon.
It arrives in September 2021 and there’ll be 600 examples available: 320 double cabs, 200 single cabs, and 80 wagons.
The wagon is the cheapest at $78,500 before on-road costs, with the single cab costing $80,050 before on-roads, and the double cab costing $82,600 before on-roads.
Externally, it’s distinguished by a ‘heritage’ black grille with the Toyota wordmark, as well as LED front fog lights and daytime running lights.
The 16-inch alloy wheels and the headlight bezels have been darkened, while the front bumper and wheel arch flares are finished in black.
There’s a ‘Heritage’ LandCruiser badge on the front fender, plus a 70th Anniversary emblem.
The interior has received an upgrade, with a wide swath of faux woodgrain across the dashboard, ‘premium’ black cloth upholstery, and a black leather-accented steering wheel and shifter.
Toyota has also added silver accents around the air vents, a ‘black treatment’ for the switches on the doors, and a new centre console with two cupholders and two USB-A outlets.
It’ll be available in three colours: French Vanilla, Merlot Red, and Sandy Taupe. The powertrain remains unchanged: a 151kW/430Nm 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
“The icing on the cake as we celebrate 70 years of LandCruiser will be the all-new 300 Series that we will launch later this year with the capability, performance and comfort to take Australians further than ever before,” said Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s vice president of sales, marketing and franchise operations.
The special edition commemorates the 1951 Japanese debut of the Toyota BJ, renamed the LandCruiser in 1954.
A second-generation model was introduced in 1955, and this was the first model exported to Australia.
Toyota has sold 1.14 million LandCruisers in Australia since its introduction, or around a tenth of total global sales since the nameplate’s debut.
The LandCruiser family currently comprises the Prado, 200 Series, and the vintage 70 Series, which was first introduced in 1985.
