The Sahara Horizon has returned to top the Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series range, priced at $131,896 before on-road costs.
With the new Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series on the horizon, Toyota has introduced a special edition of its venerable Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series.
Based on the top-spec Sahara, just 400 examples will be built of the Sahara Horizon.
It’s a repeat of earlier this year, when 400 examples were produced of an identical model.
It’ll go on sale in March 2021, priced at $131,896 before on-road costs, or $2806 more than the 2020 Sahara Horizon.
As before, it’s distinguished externally from the Sahara with a new, dark-finish grille, black headlight surrounds, and smoked chrome fog light surrounds.
Inside, black semi-aniline leather seats have new stitching and LandCruiser embossed in the backrest.
The Sahara Horizon also adds a heated steering wheel, unique stitching in the door trims, and a black colourway with chrome accents.
Front and rear puddle lights display the LandCruiser logo.
With its extra equipment and commensurately higher price tag, the Sahara Horizon is the ultimate 200 Series. The rest of the range carries over unchanged, as it has done most years since its launch in 2007.
When the 300 Series makes its debut next year, it isn’t expected to retain the twin-turbo V8 diesel.
Instead, it’ll use a pair of 3.5-litre V6 engines – one turbocharged, one hybrid – plus a new 3.3-litre turbo-diesel that could have either four or six cylinders.
It’ll use a new TNGA-F platform that’ll also be shared with other body-on-frame Toyota models like the next-generation Prado, due in 2022.
Reports indicate the 300 Series will reach Japanese showrooms in April, so an Australian debut shouldn’t be far behind.
A GR Sport trim is expected to offer a firmer suspension and a sportier appearance, while all 300 Series models should also see a significant upgrade in technology including a 12.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
All prices exclude on-road costs.
The 2021 Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series is available only with a 4.5-litre twin-turbo diesel V8engine producing 200kW of power and 650Nm of torque.
It’s matched with a six-speed automatic and full-time four-wheel drive with a limited-slip centre differential as standard.
The 2021 Toyota LandCruiser 200 uses 9.5L/100km on the combined cycle.
With a 93L main fuel tank and a 45L reserve tank as standard, the LandCruiser has a combined fuel capacity of 138L.
The 2021 Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series measures 4990mm long, 1970mm tall and 1980mm wide, with a 2850mm wheelbase.
Kerb weight is 2740kg on most variants, though the base GX weighs less at 2640kg.
Braked towing capacity on all variants is 3500kg, while unbraked is 750kg.
The 2021 Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series has $300 capped price services, and servicing is required every six months or 10,000km.
Toyota offers a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.
The Toyota LandCruiser has an ANCAP rating of five stars based on testing conducted in 2011.
All 200 Series models come standard with front, front-side and curtain airbags plus a driver’s knee airbag, with all bar the two-row GX extending curtain airbag coverage beyond the second row of seats.
The VX adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert but only the Sahara and Sahara Horizon add lane-departure warning and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection.
The GX comes with the following standard features:
Moving up to the GXL brings:
