Why the Chery Tiggo 4 is a CarExpert Choice winner

In a time of ever creeping prices, Chery has introduced a small SUV to the Australian market that's extraordinarily good value for money.

After relaunching in Australia in 2023, Chery has quickly stormed up the sales charts and the Tiggo 4 is its biggest hit yet.

The all-new small SUV arrived in Australia in 2024, and its razor-sharp pricing has seen it become the brand’s best-seller by a significant margin, as well as one of Australia’s most popular small SUVs – as of the end of May, it’s sitting in fourth position in its segment, and the wind is very much in its sails.

A hybrid version due later this year should give the Tiggo 4 even more momentum, but in picking it as our choice for BestAffordable Small SUV in the inaugural 2025 CarExpert Choice Awards, we looked at the current petrol-powered range which opens at just $23,990 drive-away.

“Following on from its larger, not-quite-standout stablemates, the Chery Tiggo 4 is the breakout star in the Chinese brand’s lineup thanks to its mix of incredible value, well-mannered driving characteristics and segment-busting practicality,” said marketplace editor James Wong.

“The entry-level segments have been stale for some time, but the Tiggo 4 is a fresh offering that is already resonating well with Australian buyers, and will soon also offer a hybrid version with 1000km of claimed driving range per fill.”

Indeed, the Tiggo 4 is not only Australia’s most affordable SUV, but even in flagship Ultimate trim it’s cheaper than entry-level versions of many rival SUVs.

For this minimal outlay, you get a spacious interior, a punchy turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, and a long list of standard equipment including plenty of active safety and driver assist technology.

“Australians are after value and at the moment no small SUV does it better than Chery’s Tiggo 4,” said marketplace journalist Max Davies.

“One of the more recent additions to the Chinese brand’s growing local stable, the Tiggo 4 offers a top-tier level of standard tech while maintaining mature driving characteristics and a family-friendly standard for safety.

“Its recent visual update improved its on-road stature, and it’s soon to get a seriously compelling hybrid option at a commendable price.”
