Australia’s new vehicle sales data from 2024 has landed, and it’s no surprise what the top-selling brand was.
Toyota was once again the top-selling brand in Australia for the 22nd year running, with its final figure almost two and a half times higher than the second-placed carmaker.
For 2024 there were a few shake ups in terms of the top five best-selling brands and how they stand. Ford beat Mazda to take second place, and Mitsubishi beat Hyundai to take fifth place.

Toyota
The Japanese carmaker set a new annual sales record in 2024 with a total of 241,296 vehicles delivered to Australian customers, meaning almost one in five new cars sold last year was a Toyota.
It broke the brand’s long-standing previous record of 238,983 vehicles that was achieved back in 2008.
2024 marked the 22nd consecutive year Toyota has been the top-selling brand in Australia.
Eight of its vehicles led their individual segments, including the Corolla, Camry, RAV4, LandCruiser wagon (300 Series, 76 Series and 78 Series), HiLux 4×2, HiAce van, HiAce Commuter bus, and Coaster bus.
This record-breaking annual sales result was driven by the brand’s hybrid offerings, particularly the RAV4, which leapfrogged the HiLux ute to become the second best-selling car overall last year.
Almost half of the Toyota vehicles delivered in 2024 were hybrids. Toyota claims this percentage will likely increase in 2025 after the company announced it would only offer hybrid powertrains where petrol power is available.

Ford
For the first time since 2008, Ford Australia exceeded 100,000 new car deliveries in 2024.
In 2024, a total of 100,170 new Ford vehicles were delivered in Australia – an improvement of 14.1 per cent on 2023 which had previously been its best year this decade.
The Ford Ranger ute was the largest contributor to the brand’s top-two position, itself being the best-selling vehicle overall for the second year in a row, with 62,593 examples delivered in 2024.
Also helping Ford crack 100,000 deliveries was the related Everest SUV, which recorded a new high of 26,494 deliveries in 2024. It was the sixth-most popular new vehicle overall last year, notably ahead of the Toyota LandCruiser Prado in its class, due in part to a changeover in generations of the latter.
Combined, the locally developed and Thai-built Ranger and Everest notched up 89,087 deliveries, or just under 90 per cent of the brand’s overall new vehicle registrations.

Mazda
For the first time in almost 10 years, Mazda dropped back to third place in the new vehicle sales race.
A total of 95,987 Mazda vehicles were delivered last year, down 4.0 per cent compared to 2023.
Mazda’s best-seller in 2024 was the CX-5, with a total of 22,835 examples delivered, down 1.1 per cent on the year prior. The mid-size SUV has been the Japanese brand’s top-seller since 2019.
Its second best-selling model was the CX-3, with a total of 18,461 examples delivered, up 17.0 per cent year-on-year. It also led the light SUV segment yet again in 2024.

Kia
Kia outsold its sister brand Hyundai in Australia for the third year in a row in 2024.
A total of 81,787 new Kia vehicles were delivered in 2024, a record for the brand in Australia.
The brand’s top-seller in 2024 was the Sportage SUV for the third year running, with a total of 22,210 examples delivered, up 41.0 per cent year-on-year.
Kia’s second top-selling vehicle in 2024 was the Cerato, completing its final full year in showrooms with 15,502 deliveries. It’s set to be replaced the K4 imminently.
Kia as a brand could grow its overall sales volume further in 2025 as it’s entering the competitive ute segment with the Tasman, due to arrive in July 2025.

Mitsubishi
Mitsubishi was one of the quiet achievers in terms of sales volume last year, with all its models in Australian showrooms experiencing an increase in deliveries throughout 2024.
A total of 74,547 new Mitsubishis were delivered in 2024, up 17.4 per cent year-on-year.
The Outlander continued to be its volume-seller, with 27,613 deliveries during 2024. The ASX finished the year in second with 12,330 examples delivered.
The Eclipse Cross and Pajero Sport also had increased deliveries to the tune of more than 1000 additional examples year-on-year, despite both being ageing models.
However, 2025 coud be a tough year for Mitsubishi, announcing this week it’s axing the current Eclipse Cross and Pajero Sport from showrooms as they don’t meet the new specific performance requirements for autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems.
While this also affects the ASX, it’ll be replaced this year with a rebadged Renault Captur already sold in Europe.
