The new electric Porsche Macan has a much higher base price than its predecessor, but in spite of this the German brand says pre-orders are stacking up from both new and existing customers.

The current, combustion-powered Macan is currently Porsche’s best-selling vehicle by far in Australia, but it will only be available for order until September.

New electric Macan models are currently available to order ahead of a local launch in the fourth quarter of 2024.

“[We have] increased the price from the previous generation but… I think we did more in the interior and the exterior to say okay, it’s a good product for you,” said Stephen Lenschow, director body system for the Macan line, to Australian media.

The new range starts with the base Macan priced at $128,400, and extends to the Macan Turbo, priced at $184,400 before on-road costs.

But that’s considerably higher than the outgoing Macan range, which opens at $95,100 before on-road costs.

The Macan has not only moved to a new platform – Premium Platform Electric (PPE) – but it also, as that name suggests, now comes exclusively with electric power.

Despite this, Porsche says plenty of existing Macan owners have put in pre-orders.

‘The pre-orders are in the hundreds. We’ve seen huge interest from both current and new Porsche customers with approximately 60 per cent of orders coming from existing buyers at this stage,” said a spokesperson for Porsche Australia.

“Enquiry is ahead of what we expected given that Australian customers have not yet seen the car in the metal.”

The Macan EV is entering an increasingly crowded luxury electric SUV market in Australia, which includes entrants from Audi, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz and will soon include Cadillac and Maserati.

While Porsche is discontinuing its combustion-powered mid-sized SUV, it has committed to continuing to offer petrol-powered Cayennes “up to and beyond 2030”.
