Polestar has helped bring the vision of a trio of aspiring designers to reality with an electric supercar concept.
The Polestar Synergy concept is the product of a collaboration between the Swedish manufacturer’s design team and members of the public who won the brand’s open design contest.
Presented this week at the IAA Munich motor show, the concept supercar is a 1:1 scale model
Dubbed an ‘electric fantasy’ by Polestar, the model’s futuristic exterior was inspired by the proportions of a hammerhead shark around a cabin said to focus on ‘floating comfort’.
The model is only 1.07m tall and 4.56m long, giving it a low-slung stance and an aerodynamic look.
Pronounced wheel arches create a hollowed-out front bonnet which is dominated by a glass top that hinges vertically.
An aerodynamic fascia features a large front splitter and cut-out air intakes on the bonnet side of the wheel arches, as well as L-shaped LED light bars stretching back behind the front wheels.
Halfway between a Le Mans racer and an aircraft-inspired monocoque cabin, the single-seater configuration is filled with ambitious tech.
A steering yoke sits in front of a floating bucket seat with harness-style seat belts.
A floating digital dash sits behind the steering wheel and a miniature instrument panel sits in the centre of it, acting as a replacement for a dash in the compact cabin.
The model’s design comes from three student designers, two exterior and one interior, picked from over 600 entrants.
Winning designers Devashish Deshmukh, Swapnil Desai, and Yingxiang Li have their names featured on the exterior near the cockpit.
Polestar provided entrants with a brief that asked them to conceptualise a model focused on performance while also making sustainable considerations.
After its initial showing at the Munich show, the Synergy will commence a world tour throughout various Polestar locations, beginning in October in the U.S. at the Hot Wheels Legends Tour in El Segundo, California.
Polestar has also announced it is launching a partnership with the Hot Wheels brand, which will see Polestar’s models being made into Hot Wheels Matchbox collectibles.
The design competition and the resulting concept model are intended to showcase Polestar’s design ambitions and potential when applied to electric vehicles (EVs).
Speaking of the design competition and the upcoming Hot Wheels partnership, Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said, “All of this proves that electric vehicles – in reality, or as toys – can be just as, if not more, exciting than their ICE equivalents.”
Availability of models in Australia has stunted the brand’s expansion, but with supply issues easing Polestar Australia confirmed that more units of its Polestar 2 will be available at the end of this year.
The brand’s next model, the Polestar 3 SUV, will land in Australia a few months later than intended in the second quarter of 2024.
The slightly smaller Polestar 4 SUV is also set to arrive late in the second quarter of 2024.
While these are all fairly practical models, Polestar is working on its first electric two-door which it previewed with the O2 and 6 LA concepts. An unspecified number of examples of the production folding hardtop convertible will come to Australia.
Polestar’s first vehicle as a standalone brand was a two-door coupe, though the Polestar 1 featured plug-in hybrid power and was never sold here.
