Swedish-Chinese automaker Polestar will enter the burgeoning electric grand tourer field in 2024 with a production version of its 2020 Precept concept.
Overnight the company gave the world a glimpse of how the concept will be transformed into the production Polestar 5.
While the overall silhouette and design are faithful to the show car, there are already a few notable changes. These include rear-hinged rear doors, more visible door handles, and wing mirrors instead of camera pods.

Interestingly the prototype displayed today has a very shallow rear windscreen, which covers only half the expected area. It’s unclear if this will be changed to a more traditional design or if the company is willing to sacrifice rearward visibility for a distinctive look.
The company has yet to fully reveal the 5’s interior, but from the teaser image released overnight we can see it remains true to the concept’s minimalist dashboard.
Ahead of the driver is a small instrumentation screen, while in the centre is a large portrait-oriented touchscreen, most likely running Google’s Android Automotive OS.
In the video series (bottom) Nahum Escobedo, Polestar’s head of exterior design, explains the Precept/Polestar 5 is meant to be elegant, but also convey the feeling of speed, much like a shark.
The Precept concept was unveiled ahead of last year’s cancelled Geneva motor show, and previewed a more distinctive design language for the brand.
With the Polestar 1 coupe going out of production, the company’s range consists solely of the Polestar 2.
It won’t be alone for long, though, with the Polestar 3 crossover due to launch next year. While it will be the first production vehicle to use Polestar’s new design language, the 3 will share its bones with the upcoming Volvo XC90 replacement.
The Volvo will be a family-focussed vehicle with three rows of seating, while the Polestar 3 will be sportier and have seating for just five.
Coming in 2023 is the Polestar 4, a smaller “coupe SUV” which might be related to the Volvo C40 Recharge electric crossover, itself a coupe version of the popular XC40.
The new 5 rounds out Polestar’s confirmed new models in 2024.
Polestar will join the Australian automotive landscape at the beginning of 2022 when the first shipments of the 2 arrive Down Under. Pricing for the electric sedan starts from around $70,000.
