Hertz is adding the Polestar 2 electric car to its rental fleet in Australia, on the back of a massive global order.
The Swedish electric liftback will touch down before the end of 2022, and joins the Tesla Model 3 on the Australian fleet.
A global Hertz order for 65,000 cars from Polestar over the next five years is part of the rental agency’s push to offer the largest EV rental fleet in North America, and one of the largest in the world.
Hertz hasn’t confirmed where the first Polestar cars will be stationed in Australia, but the first Model 3s are in Adelaide and Canberra.
Both will be promoted alongside the Toyota Yaris Cross, Corolla, Camry, RAV4, and Kluger hybrids (along with the Subaru Forester hybrid) as part of the Hertz Green Collection.
Hertz isn’t the only rental company pushing into the electric car space in Australia.
Europcar in 2021 announced it will add 40 examples of the MG ZS EV to its fleet in Melbourne, as it pushes to make a third of its global fleet electric either electric or plug-in hybrid by the end of 2023.
Although it’s dipping its toes into the electric car waters in Australia, Hertz has more aggressively committed to the EV revolution abroad.
It ordered 100,000 examples of the Tesla Model 3 during 2021, of which 50,000 will be offered to rideshare (Uber, Lyft) drivers for lease in the USA.
The latest global Polestar order isn’t quite on the same scale, but is still for 65,000 cars over five years. The majority of those will be the Polestar 2, but some will be as-yet unreleased models.
