Ford Australia eyeing eight-seat electric people mover

An electric version of the Ford Tourneo eight-seat people mover is on the cards for Australia, potentially joining the Blue Oval’s growing range of battery-powered models.

The turbo-diesel Ford Tourneo was confirmed for Australia earlier today, with showroom arrivals set for the fourth quarter of 2024 (October to December inclusive) – about a year after the model went on sale in Europe in October 2023.

The electric E-Tourneo is also due for its European launch later this year, and Ford Australia isn’t ruling out a local debut.

“We consider all available electrified options in each segment, and what would best meet the needs of those customers. For people movers, we’re certainly looking at E-Tourneo,” a Ford Australia spokesperson told CarExpert.

The Ford E-Tourneo is powered by a single electric motor which delivers up to 160kW to the front wheels – a 35kW increase compared to the Tourneo’s 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine.

Power is supplied by a 74kWh battery pack, which Ford claims can deliver up to 370km of driving range on the WLTP cycle.

It’s capable of being DC fast-charged at up to 125kW, resulting in a 15 to 80 per cent charge time of about 41 minutes.

Towing capacity for the Ford E-Tourneo drops from the diesel-powered version’s 2500kg to 2000kg, though the electric people mover gains 2300-watt power outlets in the front section of its cabin.

In Europe, the Ford E-Tourneo is sold with identical features to the top-of-the-range Tourneo Platinum X in Australia, which includes a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Bang and Olufsen sound system, power-adjustable leather front seats and a panoramic glass roof.

If the Ford E-Tourneo does come to Australia, it would potentially be priced close to $100,000 drive-away – given the similarly equipped, turbo-diesel Tourneo starts from $70,990 before on-road costs.

Ford Australia only has one model available with both a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric power: the Transit and E-Transit respectively.

The Ford E-Transit is priced from $104,990 before on-road costs, while its most direct turbo-diesel Transit counterpart is $59,990 before on-road costs.

Ford’s only other electric vehicle (EV) sold in Australia is the Mustang Mach-E SUV, which is priced from $72,990 to $104,990 before on-road costs.
