Local deliveries of Cupra’s first electric vehicle don’t begin until April, but the Spanish brand has already confirmed another 200 examples are coming Down Under.
Cupra says it has sold almost its entire initial allocation of 400 Born hatchbacks and a further 200 are now available to pre-order.
The company says these will be delivered “later in 2023”.
Cupra has 35 examples of its initial Born allocation without buyers. The company has also touted quick delivery times for its Ateca and Formentor crossovers, indicating it has strong supply.
“Initially it was Cupra’s intention to cap pre-delivery orders at 400, but such has been the response that a further 200 Borns have [been] allotted to Australia in the short term,” said Cupra’s head of product and planning, Jeff Shafer.
“We won’t at this stage estimate a total for 2023 Born sales, but there’s no doubt that this early reaction bodes well.”
The company had originally said it would pause orders until it began deliveries of the Born.
In addition to rolling out the electric Born range, Cupra has already been selling plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of its Leon hatchback and Formentor crossover, with the first allocations sold.
Cupra recently lowered the price of its Leon VZe PHEV – as well as the petrol VZx – to align it with the Born.
Pricing for the Born is the same as was announced last December, with a before on-road costs price of $59,990 and drive-away pricing as below:
- ACT: $61,990 drive-away
- NSW: $62,490 drive-away
- QLD: $63,490 drive-away
- VIC: $64,990 drive-away
- SA: $64,490 drive-away
- WA: $66,490 drive-away
Drive-away prices exclude any state-based rebates, but include variances in registration and CTP costs.

As a small electric hatchback, the Born doesn’t currently have much in the way of direct competition.
Orders have opened for the more affordable GWM Ora, while there’s the more sedate Nissan Leaf and the less practical Mini Electric.
MG is also introducing its MG 4 early this year, an electric hatchback that has been developed with the European market in mind.
