Aion, an EV-focused brand of China’s GAC Group, has made a carbon-fibre, butterfly-door electric supercar with a claimed maximum 900kW of power and a zero to 100km/h time of 1.9 seconds.
The Aion Hyper SSR, which GAC dubs “China’s first supercar”, has been designed to set “a new benchmark for China’s auto industry” in terms of both performance and manufacturing.
“Hyper SSR is self-designed, self-developed and self-manufactured. It is a 100 per cent Chinese supercar,” the company claims.
The company reckons the hi-po EV accelerates from 0-100km/h in an insane 1.9s in top-spec guise, or 2.3s in entry-level form.
The e-motor with Porsche-style two-speed transmission pushes out a claimed 900kW (1225hp), which under full throttle “brings a strong push back feeling comparable to a rocket launch at 1.7G”.
Legit or not, you have to love any supercar with performance billed as rocket-like.
On this theme, GAC Aion claims to have set up a research laboratory with China Aerospace to conduct R&D into new batteries, motors, aerodynamic designs, materials, AI control, high-precision positioning, and satellite remote sensing technology.
The company also mentions the use of aviation tyre tech with low heat retention, and 900V silicon carbide chips that work 2.5-times faster while drawing less power.
GAC Aion claims the model will be delivered from October 2023. The pre-sale price of Hyper SSR is listed as 1.286 million yuan (A$272,000), while the pre-sale price of Hyper SSR Ultimate track version is 1.688 million yuan (A$360,000).
Aion already produces other EVs such as the Aion LX Plus SUV, Aion V Plus crossover, Aion Y MPV, and Aion S Plus sedan.
