Chery introduced more powerful, GT-badged versions of its Omoda 5 small SUV at the beginning of 2024, but they’ve already gotten the axe.
The Omoda 5 GT and GT AWD are now in runout mode. We’ve contacted Chery Australia to confirm how much stock is remaining.
Chery says the Omoda 5 GT was always going to be a limited-run model. However, no mention was made of this at its initial announcement in January.

The GT and GT AWD were slotted in at the top of the Omoda 5 range, with which Chery returned to Australia in 2023. Since then it has introduced more SUVs, with the Tiggo 4 Pro sitting below it and the Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro Max above.
Usually priced at $38,990 drive-away for the GT and $40,990 for the GT AWD, the more powerful Omoda 5 models are currently eligible for a $3000 ‘bonus’.
Chery says this is applied at the point of purchase as a reduction on the purchase price.
While ‘regular’ Omoda 5 variants come with a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 108kW of power and 210Nm of torque, matched to a continuously variable automatic transmission, the GTs swap this powertrain for a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine offering 137kW and 275Nm, and mated with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
The GT variants also swap the torsion-beam rear suspension of lesser Omoda 5s for a multi-link setup, and feature larger 308mm ventilated front and 313mm solid rear brake discs.
Despite the extra power, fuel economy is slightly better in the front-wheel drive GT (6.8L/100km vs 6.9L/100km), though the addition of all-wheel drive – exclusive to the 1.6-litre engine – increases consumption to 7.4L/100km.
However, GT vehicles require 95-octane premium unleaded petrol instead of 91-octane regular unleaded.
Visually, there’s little to distinguish GTs from other Omoda 5s apart from badging and the addition of gloss black interior trim.
Those now seeking a more powerful Chery SUV can either step up to the Tiggo 7 Pro – which has the same powertrain as the Omoda 5 GT – or go electric with the Omoda E5, which produces 150kW and 340Nm.
