Chery has now clocked up 20,000 sales in Australia, after reaching the 10,000 mark just last year.

The 20,000th Chery to reach an Australian buyer was a Tiggo 7 Pro.

“Surpassing 20,000 sales in such a short time is a powerful endorsement of Chery’s appeal in Australia,” said Chery Australia CEO Lewis Lu.

“With an exciting pipeline of products including new energy vehicles, this is just the beginning.”

The Chery brand returned to Australia in 2023 with a factory-backed operation after around a decade off the market.

It launched initially with the Omoda 5 small SUV, with the mid-sized Tiggo 7 Pro following later in the year and the Tiggo 4 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro arriving during 2024. It also launched an electric version of the Omoda 5.

Chery sales grew 114 per cent in 2024, rising from 5890 in its first year to a total of 12,603 units.

It sold another 1837 vehicles in January, with VFACTS sales figures now showing 20,330 Cherys have been delivered since the first deliveries were recorded in April 2023.

That’s orders of magnitude better than its last attempt at the Australian market under distributor Ateco.

In its first year on the market, 2011, Chery delivered 1822 vehicles. But sales ran out of steam quickly and by 2015 Ateco was winding up operations.

In all, Chery delivered 4678 vehicles between 2011 and 2018.

The brand’s performance this time around – helped by products with longer features lists and vastly better safety credentials – has seen Chery overtake brands like Renault and Skoda.

Last year, Chery had the greatest year-over-year percentage increase in sales of any brand in Australia, and was the 22th best-selling brand on the market.

Chery evidently feels confident enough in its Australian performance to roll out a second brand. It’s launching Jaecoo this year, pitched as a more rugged, premium SUV marque than Chery’s namesake brand.
