Toyota will bring an upgraded GR86 with various mechanical refinements to Australia, alongside a special edition bringing even greater performance improvements.
The upgraded GR86 is set to arrive here in the fourth quarter of 2024, with improvements to the entire range – including revisions to its suspension dampers, electric power steering, engine, and throttle control – aimed at improving its on-track driving characteristics.
Toyota has yet to confirm pricing for the updated GR86.
Launching alongside the model updates is a Limited Edition GR86, of which only 86 examples will be available. It’s finished in a unique colour and features bronze wheels, while also packing styling tweaks, an updated interior, and an upgraded suspension and brake package as standard.
Updates to the full GR86 range include revisions to the damper characteristics, which are intended to deliver a “better sense of contact with the ground”.
The electric power steering has also been retuned to improve handling, responsiveness, and feel at “higher levels of performance”.
Models fitted with a manual transmission have received changes to engine torque and throttle control, aimed at providing more direct responsiveness to accelerator pedal input.
Automatic versions have received an expanded engine-speed tolerance range during downshifting, helping to make such models better on track with the support of a wider torque band.
The Limited Edition is based on the range-topping GR86 GTS and features the optional Dynamic Performance Pack as standard, adding ZF Sachs sports dampers and Brembo brakes.
ZF Sachs dampers are designed to achieve “linear damping characteristics in accordance with piston speed”, which Toyota says helps to create both comfortable daily driving and agile handling, with reduced body roll in corners.
Braking power has been improved with Brembo four-piston calipers on the front, finished in red, and two-piston calipers on the rear. These replace the standard GTS model’s two-piston front, single-piston rear brake setup.
To top it all off, the GR86 Limited Edition is painted in a unique new Forest Shadow green colour and features a set of 18-inch bronze alloy wheels. The inside has also received tweaks, gaining black and tan Ultrasuede and leather-accented upholstery.
All GR86 models are still powered by a 2.4-litre naturally aspirated flat-four engine, which produces 174kW of power and 250Nm of torque.
Drive is sent to the rear wheels through either six-speed manual or automatic transmissions, with a Torsen limited-slip rear differential fitted as standard.
The updates come on top of this year’s previous additions, which included the optional Dynamic Performance Pack for the GTS, and standard autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning, and automatic high-beam on manual models.
