Geely Auto Australia is looking to hit the market with a very competitive price for its all-new EX5 electric SUV, which may launch with a sticker dipping under the $50,000 barrier.

Speaking with CarExpert, a Geely Australia spokesperson indicated the Chinese brand’s local division is “aiming for the $49,000-$55,000 mark”.

“That is the [price range] we’re offering [as an indicator], so take it as you will. In terms of where we’re looking at sitting in the market, we’re not just compartmentalising ourselves just with [other] EVs – we’re expecting to see more of the legacy brands [customer base] having a look as well.”

“I think we’re past this early adopter phase, we’re now in this market where there’s parity between mainstream cars and electric cars, so it’s a mid-sized SUV, period.”

The Geely EX5 is expected to hit showrooms in a matter of weeks, with pre-orders already open for the new mid-size EV SUV despite final pricing not being announced yet.

Measuring 4615mm long and 1901mm wide with a 2750mm wheelbase, the Geely EX5 is almost identical in length to a Toyota RAV4 but it’s wider and has a longer wheelbase.

The EX5 is launching in Australia with two available trim levels but just one drivetrain: a 160kW/320Nm front-mounted electric motor hooked up to a 60.2kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack.

Claimed range on the WLTP cycle is rated at up to 430km for the base model on smaller 18-inch wheels (410km for the high-spec Inspire with 19s), with combined energy consumption quoted at 15.8-16.6kWh/100km.

Geely also quotes an AC charging capacity of 11kW, while DC charging is capped at 100kW. The EX5 also offers Vehicle to Load (V2L) and Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) charging capacity – with output rated at 3.3kW and 6.0kW, respectively.

Standard equipment highlights from the base model include leatherette upholstery with heated and powered front seats, LED lighting all round, a 15.4-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.2-inch LCD instrument cluster display.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are missing at launch, but will be added with an OTA software update.

Opting for the higher-spec Inspire adds a panoramic sunroof, a 13.4-inch head-up display, 16-speaker premium audio, ventilated front seats and a lounge chair for the front passenger which can be reclined with a leg rest, much like the Premium Relaxation Seats in high-end Hyundai and Kia EVs.

The company is currently offering three years of free scheduled servicing and a 12-month/1000kWh subscription to the Evie’s public EV charging network, provided buyers place orders by February 28, 2025 and take delivery by April 30, 2025.

Beyond the Tesla Model Y and Toyota RAV4, other key rivals for Geely’s electric SUV include the BYD Atto 3, Leapmotor C10, Deepal S07 and the Xpeng G6.

Stay tuned for our first drive review of the EX5 in the coming weeks.
