Pre-orders have opened for the Geely EX5 mid-sized electric SUV as a local launch for the Tesla Model Y rival nears.
It’s the first vehicle that Geely – parent of Volvo, Polestar and Lotus, among others – is launching under its namesake Geely Auto brand, which hasn’t been seen here since the early 2010s.
Alongside pre-orders opening, Geely’s local website now has a configurator available.
UPDATE, 4/2/2025 –Geely has provided more specification information for the EX5. We’ve updated this article accordingly.
Geely’s brand is a more mass-market one than the more premium Polestar, Volvo and Zeekr.

As such, the EX5 will be a direct rival for the ever-popular Tesla Model Y, and it’s bringing a range of standard gear supported by the backing of a company that has been in Australia for many years now through its various subsidiaries.
Unlike other vehicles from the Geely empire sold in Australia, the EX5 is underpinned by the Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA) currently used only by vehicles from the Geely Auto brand.
The GEA platform is a derivative of the Geely group’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), which underpins vehicles like the Volvo EX30.
Unlike SEA, GEA is said to be “the world’s first four-in-one AI intelligent architecture combining ‘hardware, system, ecology, and AI” according to Geely.
The EX5 is powered by an 11-in-1 “intelligent electric drive” system, which is intended to be “the lightest, smallest, and most efficient intelligent electric drive in the industry”.
Overseas, the EX5 is already on sale but wearing different names. In China it’s known as the Geely Galaxy E5, while in Malaysia it’s sold under the local Proton brand as the eMas 7. Two different batteries are offered internationally.
Locally, the EX5 will be offered in two variants, both featuring the same 160kW/300Nm electric motor setup.
Australian pricing is yet to be confirmed for the EX5, though the brand says it’ll announce pricing at its local launch event in the coming weeks.
In China, the Galaxy E5 lineup ranges in price from 109,800 yuan to 145,800 yuan (A$24,922 to A$33,094), with the Chinese equivalent to the incoming Australian EX5 priced at 135,800 yuan (A$30,819).
Only one electric motor setup is available for the EX5: a 160kW unit driving the front wheels only.
