Chery Australia’s second plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is the Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid, which launched in tandem with the mechanically identical Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid.
Dubbed Chery Super Hybrid (CSH), the system pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an 18.3kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack and a single-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission, sending power to the front wheels only.
The result is a claimed fuel economy of just 1.3L/100km, and a claimed electric driving range of 93km on the more lenient NEDC testing regime – both marginally better than the Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid, despite the Tiggo 8 being roughly 100kg heavier.
The system will feature in the upcoming Tiggo 9 Super Hybrid, while its CSH designation differs from the SHS name used for Chery-owned Jaecoo Super Hybrids.
The Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid joins the petrol-powered Tiggo 8 Pro Max, which uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and is offered with either front- or all-wheel drive.
The Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid is distinguished from its petrol sibling by a different front grille.
Inside the Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid, there’s a new 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display and 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster – a significant upgrade over the Tiggo 8 Pro Max, which still features dual 12.3-inch screens for each function.
Chery charges a $6000 premium over an equivalent Tiggo 8 Pro Max to get plug-in hybrid power.
Despite this, the Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid undercuts the most affordable seven-seat Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Mazda CX-80 P50e, and Kia Sorento PHEV SUVs by more than $25,000.
Both the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 Super Hybrids were benchmarked against traditional plugless hybrids from Hyundai and Toyota, as confirmed to CarExpert by Chery chief engineer David Xianqiang Lu.
This is because the brand intended to make its CSH system drive like a traditional hybrid, but with the advantage of recharging and long-distance electric-only motoring.
Our launch review of the Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid is now live, and you can read it here.
