Mercedes-Benz has been rolling out a range of electric vehicles on a dedicated platform, and the EQE SUV could be the most popular of the lot.
Riding the same Electric Vehicle Architecture as the EQE sedan, EQS fastback and upcoming EQS SUV, it’s sized between the outgoing EQC, for which orders have now closed, and the combustion-powered GLE.
It’s due in showrooms in September, and will come from the same US factory as the likes of the GLE and EQS SUV.
The EQE SUV range at launch will consist of the single-motor rear-wheel drive EQE 300 SUV and dual-motor all-wheel drive EQE 350 4MATIC SUV and EQE 500 4MATIC SUV, plus the high-performance Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 4MATIC+ SUV.
The EQE 500 4MATIC SUV will only be here for a limited time. Mercedes-Benz hasn’t confirmed precisely how long it will stick around, however.
The EQE SUV range rides on independent four-link front and multi-link rear suspension, although non-AMG models can be optioned with air suspension with adaptive damping that’s capable of raising suspension by 30mm in the off-road setting.
AMG Active Ride Control air suspension is standard on AMG models.
Rear-axle steering is also available on the EQE SUV, allowing up to 10 degrees of rotation (nine degrees on AMG models due to wider tyres) to increase dynamic handling and also reduce the turning circle from 12.3m to 10.5m.
While it doesn’t quite hit the record-breaking coefficient of drag seen on the EQS sedan, the EQE SUV offers up a slick .25 CoD, making it one of the most aerodynamically efficient vehicles on the market.
Mercedes-Benz Australia has previously said it expects the EQE SUV to generate the highest interest of all EQ models.
CarExpert understands this could translate to stronger sales figures than not only the EQE sedan, but also the wider EQ range.
All prices exclude on-road costs.
There are four drivetrains in the EQE SUV line-up.
The single-motor rear-wheel drive EQE 300 SUV produces 180kW of power and 550Nm of torque.
The dual-motor all-wheel drive EQE 350 4MATIC SUV produces 215kW of power and 765Nm of torque, good for a claimed 0-100km/h time of 6.3 seconds.
The dual-motor all-wheel drive EQE 500 4MATIC SUV produces 300kW and 858Nm, for a 0-100km/h time of 4.7 seconds.
The dual-motor all-wheel drive EQE 53 4MATIC+ SUV produces 460kW and 950Nm, for a 0-100km/h time of 3.7 seconds or 3.5 seconds with the AMG Dynamic Plus Package.
The EQE 300 SUV and EQE 350 4MATIC SUV use an 89kWh lithium-ion battery, while the EQE 500 4MATIC SUV and EQE 53 AMG+ SUV use a 90.6kWh battery.
Mercedes-Benz says the EQE SUV offers up to 539km of range on the more lenient NEDC cycle, but has yet to detail range claims by variant for the Australian market.
A look at Mercedes-Benz’s German website reveals the following claims, under the stricter WLTP cycle:
The battery can be charged at up to 11kW on AC power and 170kW on DC power.
The Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV measures 4863mm long, 1940mm wide and 1686mm tall on a 3030mm wheelbase. That means it rides a wheelbase 90mm shorter than the EQE sedan it’s based on.
It has 520L of boot space, expanding to 1675L with the rear seats folded.
While it hasn’t detailed specific servicing prices and warranty terms for the EQE SUV, Mercedes-Benz backs its EQE and EQS with a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty and provides a 10-year, 250,000km warranty for the high-voltage battery.
The Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV has yet to be tested by ANCAP or Euro NCAP.
