GWM has slashed prices of its Ora hatchback, cementing it as Australia’s cheapest electric car – at least for now.
The Chinese brand has announced new nationwide drive-away pricing for the Ora range, which now opens at $35,990 drive-away for the Standard Range – down $4000 on the previous price before on-road costs.
Given the Standard Range previously cost up to $42,500 drive-away in Victoria, the actual saving is up to $6510.
The Extended Range has been reduced from $45,990 before on-roads to $40,990 drive-away, while the Ultra and GT have also received $5000 price cuts to bring them to $43,990 and $46,990 drive-away, respectively.
According to GWM’s website, this pricing applies to vehicles ordered and delivered by June 30, 2024.
The company says it has been able to take advantage of favourable exchange rates.
The Ora thus far is GWM’s only electric model here, complementing four hybrid models. GWM says it’s also studying the possibility of bringing plug-in hybrid models here.
Earlier this year, GWM had applied a discount of up to $4000 across Ora models ordered and delivered before March 31, though drive-away pricing still varied from state to state.
The promotion was enough to see it reclaim the title of Australia’s cheapest electric vehicle (EV), a title it had for a short period of time before losing it to the MG 4 in mid-2023 and then later the BYD Dolphin.
With this new nationwide drive-away pricing, the Ora comfortably undercuts both its key rivals.
That’s despite MG rolling out nationwide drive-away pricing of its own in March, bringing the base price of both its MG 4 and ZS EV electric models to $39,990 drive-away.
That was enough to see the MGs become Australia’s cheapest electric cars, at least in most states. The BYD Dolphin still undercuts them in the ACT and Northern Territory, where it’s priced at $39,556 drive-away.
In the first two months of this year, the MG 4 was the best-selling vehicle of this trio with 983 units sold – ahead of the BYD Dolphin (475 sales), and well ahead of the GWM Ora (186 sales).
The Ora features a front-mounted electric motor with 126kW of power and 250Nm of torque.
It’s offered with either a 48kWh lithium iron phosphate or a 63kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery.
WLTP range is 310km in the Standard Range, 420km in the Extended Range and Ultra, and 400km in the GT.
