Skoda is already working on an update to its Volkswagen Golf-sized Scala hatchback.
The 2023 Scala has been snapped testing in Europe, wearing disguises at both ends to hide what appears to be a mild mid-life nip-and-tuck.
Expect to see detail changes to the lights at both ends, and what looks like a massaged grille in keeping with the latest Fabia.
It’s not clear what will change under the skin, but it’s likely the Scala will keep its range of turbocharged petrol engines.
In Australia, the Scala is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, mated with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Although it makes 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque, same as the 1.4-litre unit in the latest Golf, the Scala’s engine is actually newer and more efficient.
It packs the ability to shut down two cylinders on light throttle, and isn’t lumped with a less efficient torque converter automatic.
Skoda has sold 832 examples of the Scala to date in 2021, putting it 100 behind the Octavia sedan and wagon in the Skoda sales race.
Volkswagen has sold 1168 examples of the Golf in the same period.
With 7120 sales to date in 2021, Skoda is already ahead of its all-time yearly sales record of 7001, set in 2019.
That growth shows no sign of abating, either. The new Kodiaq seven-seater is on track to arrive in Australia late in 2021, with the Fabia small hatch to follow early in 2022.
Skoda launched the new Octavia earlier in 2021, and debuted the Kamiq SUV and Scala hatch in 2020.
