There’s no missing this Jeep.
At 5759mm long, the 2023 Jeep Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L are 305mm longer than their standard-length counterparts, 178mm of that in the wheelbase which grows to 3303mm.
That makes them even longer than a Chevrolet Suburban (5733mm) or a FoHe sord Expedition Max (5636mm). For context, a Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series is a comparatively diminutive 5015mm in its longest guise.
As with the regular-length models, these body-on-frame SUVs – related to the Ram 1500 – are being produced exclusively in left-hand drive.
Those expecting a big honkin’ V8 engine under the bonnet will be in for a surprise, with the extended Jeeps following the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator in only offering six-cylinder power.
Motivation comes from Stellantis’ new Hurricane 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six petrol engine, which produces 313kW of power and 635Nm of torque in the Wagoneer L’s standard-output tune and 375kW and 678Nm in the more luxurious Grand Wagoneer L’s high-output tune.
The naturally-aspirated 5.7-litre and 6.4-litre V8 engines available in the regular-length models won’t be offered, and Jeep promises an improvement of up to 15 per cent in efficiency with the new sixes.
The only transmission is an eight-speed torque-converter automatic.
Jeep touts towing capacity of up to 4535kg in the Wagoneer L.
There’s four-wheel independent suspension, with a double-wishbone set-up up front and a multi-link, coil-spring set-up at the rear.
Air suspension with electronically controlled, semi-active damping is available on the Wagoneer L and standard on the Grand Wagoneer L, and there’s a choice of three four-wheel drive systems.
Quadra-Trac 1 is a full-time system with a single-speed transfer case and a mechanical rear limited-slip differential, while Quadra-Trac II features a two-speed transfer case and Quadra-Drive II has a rear electronic LSD.
Open the rear tailgate and it looks like a van, with 1251L of cargo space behind the third row alone, a figure Jeep says is the best in its class.
The base Wagoneer L Series I has leather upholstery, with other variants receiving Nappa or even richer quilted Palermo leather upholstery.
The Grand Wagoneer L also includes 24-way power front seats with memory, massage, power lumbar support and four-way power headrests.
There’s seating for up to eight passengers in these longer SUVs, though second-row captain’s chairs are available on the Wagoneer L and standard on the Grand Wagoneer L.
American SUVs used to be known for the sheer number of cupholders they had, but in 2022 it’s all about USB ports with between eight and 11 scattered around the cabin.
The Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L are also heavy on screens.
Both feature a 10.25-inch touchscreen for climate controls, while sitting above that is either a 10.1-inch (Wagoneer L) or 12-inch (Grand Wagoneer L) infotainment touchscreen running UConnect 5 and featuring Amazon Alexa and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Ahead of the driver is either a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster in the Wagoneer L, or a 12.3-inch unit in the Grand Wagoneer L.
There’s an available 10.25-inch screen for the passenger with media and navigation functions, exterior camera views and Amazon Fire TV, as well as an available rear-seat entertainment system.
Grand Wagoneer L models also come with a 10.25-inch “comfort display screen” in the second row.
Other in-car tech includes a 4G LTE wi-fi hotspot, a 10-inch head-up display, and colour-adjustable ambient lighting.
Depending on the variant, there’s a 19- or 23-speaker McIntosh sound system, while Grand Wagoneer L models also get a digital rear-view mirror and rear seat camera views on the touchscreen.
Safety technology includes autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with stop/go, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view camera and traffic sign recognition.
There’s also available night vision with pedestrian and animal detection.
All models feature LED headlights (“premium” units in the Grand Wagoneer L), while 18-inch alloy wheels are standard on the Wagoneer L with 20- and 22-inch alloys available throughout the range.
Jeep has also used the 2022 New York motor show to reveal a Carbide package for all Wagoneer and Wagoneer L models, featuring a tri-pane panoramic sunroof, gloss black exterior elements, plus a black interior with Smoke accent stitching.
We haven’t seen an American SUV of this size in Australia since Holden briefly imported the Suburban from 1998 to 2000.
This is Jeep’s first truly full-sized SUV, giving it a rival for the Chevrolet Suburban, Ford Expedition and GMC Yukon XL in Wagoneer L guise and a competitor for the Cadillac Escalade ESV and Lincoln Navigator L in Grand Wagoneer L guise.
