The second-generation Volkswagen Amarok will go on sale in 2022 and we already have a very good idea what it’ll look like.
A new teaser unveiled at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ annual press conference shows off the new Amarok’s boxy silhouette, purposeful squared-off wheel arches, and headlight elements that flow directly into the grille.
According to Carsten Intra, the CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles: “[The new Amarok] will not only be a great pickup truck. This will also be a real Volkswagen with a clear signature in technology and design.”
As part of a wide-ranging alliance between Ford and Volkswagen, the new Amarok will utilise the Ford Ranger platform.
The two firms will also jointly develop a series of vans, and Ford will use Volkswagen’s MEB architecture for electric cars designed for Europe.
We’re not exactly sure how much visual separation will be given to the two utes, but we can see in this official preview the new Amarok will have wing mirrors exactly like the ones used on the current Ranger.
Our rendering of the new Ranger is based on information gleaned from the final clay rendering of the upcoming ute, and indicates there will significant styling differences, with each model having its own set of exterior panels.
With most jointly developed utes, differentiation is typically limited to unique front-end and lighting designs.
That said, the previous generation Mazda BT-50 and Ford Ranger pair had vastly different exterior and interior designs.
According to our sources, the new Ranger will be available with four- and six-cylinder turbo-diesel engines, as well as a 2.3-litre plug-in hybrid.
