Subaru Australia has limited stock of the 2022 BRZ, as it deals with the same component shortage issues plaguing other automakers.
The company has secured an initial allocation of 500 vehicles, set to arrive as early as December 2021 for test drives ahead of the official launch in January 2022.
Deliveries will start in the middle of the first quarter of 2022, and will continue into the second quarter.
“We’ve limited the first run and the first allocation to 500 so we can provide confidence to our dealer network and to our customers on timing for those units,” said Subaru Australia general manager Blair Read.
The company hasn’t provided timing for any subsequent allocations, or how many cars they’ll comprise.
“As the picture beyond that 500 becomes clearer and we have confidence in that number, we will start to open up. That may be sooner rather than later,” said Mr Read.
He added that while circumstances are improving at Subaru, there’s still some uncertainty with supply.
Subaru is anticipating “overwhelming interest”, having already received expressions of interest from 2900 customers since the online portal opened in May 2021.
Pre-orders open today, and prospective customers will be able to place a pre-order either through the Subaru website or through their dealer.
There’s a refundable $1000 deposit required to pre-order a BRZ.
The company is expecting the BRZ to appeal to a broader group of buyers.
“Traditionally, our buyer has been more male-skewed, and usually between the ages of 25 and 54. We have had, over the years though, a really big focus from young families and this has become a second ‘fun’ car for mum and dad,” said national marketing manager Amanda Leaney.
“We’re hoping to expand the consumption market of those who choose to buy a BRZ and we’re very much looking forward to shifting from male-oriented car to one that’s more neutral across both genders.”
The company is hoping for a repeat of the reception to the first-generation BRZ, of which the first allocation sold out in under four hours.
The new BRZ is a bit pricier than the outgoing model, though there’s quite a bit more standard equipment.

The outgoing BRZ range opens at $35,270 before on-road costs and tops out at $41,190 before on-roads for the tS.
In contrast, the new car ranges from $38,990 to $43,990 before on-roads.
