And then there were two. The Skoda Superb is one of a pair of vehicles left in VFACTS’ mainstream large car segment, alongside the Kia Stinger.

It has entered 2022 largely unchanged, apart from drive-away pricing $1000-2000 higher than before.

“[Skoda] absorbed price increase pressures throughout 2021, but at some point these have to be passed on,” said a Skoda Australia spokesperson.

“Essentially price rises are due to both inflation and significant increases in manufacturing costs.”

One casualty of the semi-conductor chip shortage is the Canton 12-speaker sound system, which is temporarily unavailable. Matrix LED headlights are also temporarily unavailable for the Style.

Unlike the Kia Stinger, the Superb offers a choice of both hatchback and wagon body styles, much like the departed Holden Commodore.

This part of the market is being thinned out. The Chrysler 300 is also dead, while the mid-sized segment has lost the likes of the Ford Mondeo and Subaru Liberty in recent times.

Skoda sold 597 Superbs in 2021, less than the Kia Stinger (1407) and slightly smaller, mechanically-related Volkswagen Passat sedan and wagon (948).

Engines

The 2022 Skoda Superb 162TSI Style is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, driving the front wheels. It produces 162kW of power and uses a six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The Superb 206TSI Sportline also uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol four-cylinder, albeit driving all four wheels and producing 206kW of power and 350Nm of torque.

All models use a six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. Unlike the departed Scout, the 2022 Superb range doesn’t feature a petrol particulate filter (PPF).

The Style has a claimed 0-100km/h time of 7.0 seconds in the liftback and 7.1 seconds in the wagon, while the Sportline does the dash in 6.0 seconds in the liftback and 6.1 seconds in the wagon.

Fuel Economy

The 2022 Skoda Superb uses 7.1L/100km and 7.2L/100km in 162TSI Sedan and Wagon variants, respectively, while the 206TSI Sportline Sedan and Wagon use 8.0L and 8.1L/100km.

All models run on 95RON premium unleaded fuel and have a 66L fuel tank.

Dimensions

The 2022 Skoda Superb measures 4861mm long, 1864mm wide and 1468mm tall in five-door liftback (‘Sedan’) form, with a wheelbase spanning 2841mm.

Meanwhile, the Superb Wagon is slightly shorter at 4856mm, while maintaining the 1864mm width and 2841mm wheelbase. It is, however, slightly taller at 1477mm.

The sedan offers 625L of luggage space in five-seat layout and 1760L with the second row folded.

Opting for the wagon ups luggage space to 660L and a massive 1950L with the rear seats folded.

Tare mass is 1470kg in the Style liftback, 1505kg in the Style wagon, 1580kg in the Sportline liftback, and 1615kg in the Sportline wagon.

Unbraked towing capacity is 750kg in all models and maximum downball weight is 90kg, while braked towing capacity is 2000kg in the Style and 2200kg in the Sportline.

Servicing and Warranty

All Skoda Australia models are covered by a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty with a year of complimentary roadside assistance – which is extended for 12 months at a time if you service your vehicle with a Skoda dealer.

Skoda is offering a seven-year warranty and a service pack covering seven years, with three free services, until June 30, 2022.

The seven-year, 105,000km service pack costs $2700 on the Style and $2900 on the Sportline.

Both models are also available with five-year, 75,000km service packs, while a four-year, 60,000km pack can be purchased after your car’s first scheduled service or 12 months after the warranty starts.

The five- and four-year packs cost $1800 and $1600, respectively, in the Style, and $2000 and $1800 in the Sportline.

The Superb requires servicing every 12 months or 15,000km – whichever comes first.

Safety

The Skoda Superb wears a five-star ANCAP safety rating based on tests of the pre-facelift model conducted in 2015.

It scored 86 per cent for adult occupant protection, 86 per cent for child occupants, 71 per cent for pedestrian protection and 76 per cent for safety assist.

Key feedback included marginal driver chest protection in the full-width frontal test, as well as marginal whiplash protection for rear passengers.

Dual frontal, side chest and side head airbags (curtains), and a driver knee airbag are standard. Advanced seat belt reminders are fitted to all seats.
