2022 Polestar 2 EV earns five-star ANCAP safety rating

The 2022 Polestar 2 has been awarded top marks in ANCAP crash testing, scoring five stars against the latest 2020-2022 criteria.

The high-riding electric hatchback earned its five-star rating on the back of scores of 92 per cent for adult occupant protection, 87 per cent for child occupant protection, 80 per cent for vulnerable road user protection, and 82 per cent for safety assist.

This five-star safety rating applies to all variants of the Australian-spec Polestar 2.

Using the crash testing data collected by its EuroNCAP counterpart, ANCAP gave the Polestar 2 high scores in all crash tests, with full points awarded for adult and child occupants in the side impact test.

This particular crash test simulates the effects of a T-bone crash.

ANCAP penalised the Polestar 2, however, for vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility, as it was shown to provide a high risk of injury to occupants of a ‘collision partner’ vehicle when struck.

“Today’s consumers are looking to purchase vehicles with top safety and environmental credentials,” said ANCAP CEO, Carla Hoorweg.

“The well-rounded Polestar 2 ticks these boxes and adds to the suite of five-star rated EVs now available to Australasian consumers.

“ANCAP safety ratings are designed to encourage vehicles to provide good protection to vehicle occupants and other road users, and the Polestar 2 has performed well across all areas of assessment.”

Standard safety equipment across the Polestar 2 range includes the following:

• Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with cyclist and pedestrian detection and steering assistance
• Oncoming Lane Mitigation (steers the car back into its lane if you veer into the path of an oncoming vehicle)
• Run-Off Road Mitigation (steers the car back onto the road if it detects you’ll veer off of it)
• Lane-keep assist
• Traffic sign recognition
• Driver attention monitoring
• Eight airbags
• Reversing camera with front and rear parking sensors
• Active bonnet

The 2022 Polestar 2 does miss out on standard safety features such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic assist, which are bundled into an option pack.

The $5000 Pilot Pack includes the following:

• Adaptive cruise control
• Pilot Assist
• Surround-view camera
• Side parking sensors
• Blind-spot assist
• Rear cross-traffic assist
• Pixel LED headlights
• LED front fog lights

The Polestar 2 is the fifth battery electric vehicle (BEV) to be tested against ANCAP’s 2020-2022 criteria, adding to a total of 43 BEV, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), hydrogen fuel-cell (FCEV) and hybrid vehicles rated by ANCAP to date.
