After giving the Prado a power boost in 2020, Toyota has now given its top-selling large SUV some extra equipment.
UPDATE, 7/7/2021 – Toyota has announced the Prado will receive additional updates for 2021. We’ve included this information below.
GX and GXL models’ suite of safety features now include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the GX also gets some aesthetic enhancements in the form of a chrome grille and puddle lights.
At the other end of the range, the VX and Kakadu get new 19-inch alloy wheel designs.
Updated models will arrive in showrooms from mid-July 2021.
There have been price increases across the board, with GX and GXL models up by $990 and VX and Kakadu models receiving a peculiar $777 increase.
These updates follow a 2020 update that included a more powerful 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine with 150kW of power and 500Nm of torque, plus a larger 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Engine
The 2021 Toyota Prado is powered by the same 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine used in the HiLux and Fortuner, producing 150kW of power and 500Nm of torque.
The extra 20kW and 50Nm over the previous iteration comes courtesy of a new ball-bearing turbocharger, better cooling, and changes to the cylinder block and head.
It’s mated with a six-speed automatic transmission and switchable four-wheel drive.
Fuel Economy
The 2021 Toyota Prado uses a claimed 7.9L/100km, and the Prado has a 150L fuel capacity as standard across two fuel tanks: an 87L main tank, and a 63L sub tank.
The flat tailgate version (without the boot-mounted spare tyre) only has the 87L main tank.
Dimensions
The 2021 Toyota Prado measures 4995mm long, 1890mm tall and 1885mm wide, with a 2790mm wheelbase.
Models with the optional flat tailgate are shorter at 4825mm.
The Prado’s kerb weight starts at 2230kg for the base five-seater and jumps to 2455kg for range-topping seven-seat versions.
Servicing and Warranty
The 2021 Toyota Prado requires maintenance every six months or 10,000km – whichever comes first.
Each of the first six services (or each scheduled service in the first three years of maintenance) will cost $260.
As with the wider Toyota line-up, it’s backed by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.
