The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is no shrinking violet when it comes to off-road ability, but there’s an even more rugged variant planned.
As these spy photographs show, the current generation of G-Class will also receive a 4×4² version though we don’t yet know when it’ll make its official debut.
Like the original model, the new 4×4² sits higher off the ground and has a wider track, larger wheel arch extensions, and a set of chunkier, high-profile off-road tyres.
Expect portal gear axles to also make a return for this latest generation of 4×4².
There’s some camouflage on the larger wheel arches and the spare tyre cover, as well as a section atop the windscreen which we believe is home to a LED light bar.
Other exterior touches include side steps and a ladder to access the roof rack.
We don’t know what will power the latest 4×4², though our spy photographers said the amount of noise this G made suggested it was a Mercedes-AMG model.
The first-generation model came in G500 form with a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine making 310kW of power and 610Nm of torque, an engine that’s still available in the current generation of G-Class.
Despite the 4×4²’s off-road focus, it was still quick enough to do the 0-100km/h sprint in under five seconds.
The V8 was hooked up to a seven-speed automatic, full-time four-wheel drive, and three lockable differentials. Riding on 22-inch wheels with 325/55 tyres, the 4×4² had a ground clearance of 450mm, and a fording depth up to 1000mm.
Should the new 4×4² get the G63 AMG treatment it’ll also pack a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, albeit with 430kW of power and 850Nm of torque.
