Ford’s new heritage-inspired, range-topping Pony Car will be available with both manual and auto transmissions when it arrives in the second quarter of 2021.

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 will be priced at $83,365 before on-road costs, regardless of whether you select the 10-speed automatic transmission or the Tremec six-speed manual.

It doesn’t quite travel at the speed of sound but the Mach 1 packs an uprated naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 engine producing 345kW of power and 556Nm of torque, identical to last year’s manual-only Bullitt.

That’s slightly down on the US-market Mach 1, which outputs 358kW of power and 570Nm of torque. It’s nevertheless an improvement on the GT’s 339kW and 556Nm.

This isn’t a simple Bullitt redux however, with the Mach 1 scoring its rear axle cooler and lower diffuser from the fire-breathing supercharged Shelby GT500 and its intake manifold, engine oil cooler and six-speed manual with automatic rev matching from the recently discontinued Shelby GT350.

Like the Bullitt, it’s dressed up to look like another late 1960s Mustang – the Mach 1, a flagship performance variant introduced in 1969 and offered continuously until 1978.

To that effect, there are bonnet stripes and 19-inch alloy wheels reminiscent of those of the first Mach 1.

Ford will offer five exterior colourways. These include Shadow Black and Oxford White, which feature satin black and red stripes, and Velocity Blue and Twister Orange, which have satin black and white stripes.

A fifth colour, Fighter Jet Grey, comes with satin black and reflective orange stripes and is the only Mach 1 available with an appearance pack. This pack, which costs $1000, adds orange trim on the seatbacks, plus orange brake calipers.

All Mach 1s have new upper and lower front grilles finished in gloss black, and an ebony interior with engine-turned aluminium detailing and grey stitching details on the leather seats. Recaro leather sport seats are optional.

As expected of a limited edition, there are additional badges and a unique dashboard plaque with the Mach 1 logo and the car’s chassis number.

There’s a retuned suspension with recalibrated MagneRide adaptive dampers, springs, anti-roll bars and bushes, plus retuned steering. The active exhaust has also been tuned specifically for the Mach 1.
