2020 Volkswagen Tiguan price and specs

Volkswagen offers eight Tiguan variants in Australia, with prices starting at $34,490 before on-roads for the 110TSI Trendline and extending to $54,690 before on-roads for the 140TDI Highline Allspace.

Two bodies are offered. The regular Tiguan is a five-seat rival to the Mazda CX-5, while the Allspace is 215mm longer and has a third row to turn it into a seven-seat rival to the Skoda Kodiaq. There’s also a choice of front-wheel drive or 4Motion all-wheel drive and petrol or diesel power.

October marks the return of the range-topping, diesel-powered 140TDI Highline Allspace.

Engines

Power in the 110TSI comes from a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque, put to the front wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The 132TSI is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 132kW and 320Nm, hooked up to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. It’s all-wheel drive, unlike the 110TSI.

Moving to the 162TSI gets you a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 162kW and 350Nm. Once again, it’s hooked up to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and all-wheel drive.

The 140TDI is the only diesel engine in the range. It’s a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine with 140kW of power and 400Nm of torque and also uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Fuel Economy

The 110TSI Tiguan has combined fuel consumption of 7.1L/100km, jumping to 7.3L/100km for the larger 110TSI Allspace.

The 132TSI uses a claimed 7.6L/100km on the combined cycle, the 132TSI Allspace claims 7.9L/100km.

The 162TSI uses 8.1L/100km in five-seat guise and 8.3L/100km in the seven-seat Allspace, while the 140TDI Allspace consumes 6.0L/100km.

Dimensions

The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan measures 4486mm long, 1839mm wide and 1658mm tall, with a 2681mm wheelbase. Boot space is listed at 615L with the rear seats in place, and 1655L with them folded.

The 2020 Tiguan Allspace is 4701mm long, 1839mm wide and 1665mm tall, with a 2790mm wheelbase. Boot space is listed at 230L with the third row in place, expanding 1775L with both rows of rear seats folded.

Safety

The Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace have a five-star safety rating from ANCAP, based on testing carried out in 2016.

Autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection is standard across the range, along with lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning and front, front-side and curtain airbags plus a driver’s knee airbag.

A range of options packages are offered, starting with the Driver Assistance Package ($1400) for the Comfortline. It adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and emergency assist.

Also available on the Comfortline is the Luxury Package ($4000) with heated, power front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and leather trim.

The Sound and Vision Package ($3200) brings digital instruments, a premium audio system, a surround-view camera, and ambient lighting in the Comfortline.

The same package costs $3000 in the Highline, and adds everything except ambient lighting – which is already standard.

The R-Line Package ($2900) is offered exclusively on the Highline and brings unique bumpers and side skirts, a black rear spoiler, 20-inch alloy wheels, black leather seats, sports pedals, and a sports steering wheel.
