2020 Volkswagen Golf R Final Edition arriving soon

Volkswagen showrooms are about to get even more colourful.

Joining the bright orange Polos and turquoise T-Cross SUVs in showrooms in the next few weeks is the 2020 VolkswagenGolf R Final Edition hatch, priced at $57,990 before on-road costs.

The vividly-coloured special edition also closes the door on the Mk7 Golf. The Mk8 Golf touches down in Australia early next year.

Volkswagen is producing 450 units of the Final Edition, with 150 units available in a choice of three unique Volkswagen Colour Concept shades: Victory Blue, Viper Green and Violet Touch.

You’ll pay an extra $300 for the privilege, with each car removed from the assembly line and hand-painted in a specialised factory shop.

If these exciting colours don’t tickle your fancy, you can choose between the familiar Lapiz Blue and Deep Black Pearl, or choose the Pure White that most Golf GTIs and Golf Rs seem to be painted in. 

The Final Edition costs an extra $2500 over a regular Golf R but there are some additions. These include the Dynaudio Excite 400W eight-speaker premium sound system and gloss black exterior mirrors.

It also swaps out the standard 19-inch Spielberg alloy wheels for 19-inch Black Pretoria ones – as seen on last year’s R Special Edition – and replaces the standard Vienna leather upholstery with Carbon Nappa trim.

That’s in addition to the standard kit of the R, such as adaptive cruise control, heated front seats, LED headlights, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster display, and a 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and satellite navigation.

The only option is a panoramic glass sunroof, priced at $1900.

The powertrain is unchanged, the Final Edition using the regular R’s turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine – producing 213kW of power and 380Nm of torque – that sends power to all four wheels through a seven-speed DSG wet-clutch automatic transmission.

In addition to Volkswagen’s five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, the company offers five years of capped-price servicing. Services are at 12-month/15,000km intervals, with the first five costing $425, $561, $647, $807 and $359, respectively.
