The 2020 Ford Transit Custom is Ford’s entry-level van, with prices ranging from $42,390 before on-road costs for the Transit Custom 340S SWB manual to $53,690 before on-road costs for the Transit Custom 320L Sport LWB auto.
Unlike the larger Transit, which offers a choice of front- or rear-wheel drive, the Transit Custom is front-wheel drive-only and serves as Ford’s rival to the Renault Trafic and Mercedes-Benz Vito.
All prices exclude on-road costs.
The 2020 Ford Transit Custom 340L and 340S models use a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine producing 125kW and 390Nm. It’s mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
The 2020 Ford Transit Custom Sport 320S and 320L also use a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, albeit one with 136kW and 405Nm. It’s mated exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission.
The 2020 Ford Transit Custom 340S consumes 6.6L/100km on the combined cycle with a manual transmission and 7.2L/100km with an automatic.
The long-wheelbase Transit Custom 340L manual consumes 6.5-6.6L/100km, depending on the roof height, while the 340L automatic consumes 7.2-7.3L/100km.
The Transit Custom 320S consumes 7.2L/100km while the 320L consumes 7.3L/100km.
The 2020 Ford Transit Custom measures 4973mm long in short-wheelbase guise and 5340mm long in long-wheelbase guise.
Height varies from model to model. Not counting the roof rails, the Transit Custom measures between 2011.2mm and 2023.4mm tall in low roof models and 2378.1mm and 2380.7mm tall in high roof models.
Width for all models is 1986mm.
When the Ford Transit Custom was tested by ANCAP in 2012, it received a rating of fivestars.
That rating was based on an adult occupant protection score of 84 per cent, child occupant protection of 90 per cent, pedestrian protection of 48 per cent and safety assist of 71 per cent.
All 2020 Ford Transit Custom models come standard with autonomous emergency braking with forward-collision warning and pedestrian detection, as well as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, anti-lock brakes and front, side and curtain airbags.
The 2020 Ford Transit Custom 340S and 340L come standard with the following features:
A high roof is a $1500 option on all 340S and 340L models bar the 340L DCiV.
The Transit Custom Sport 320S and 320L add the following features:
Optional across the range are dual side doors (with or without windows) and a rear liftgate in lieu of the standard twin-hinged back doors.
All 2020 Ford Transit Custom models require servicing every 12 months or 30,000km, whichever comes first.
In addition to a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty, Ford also offers four years of capped price servicing. The first four services have a maximum cost of $349 each.
