The first-generation Haval H6 didn’t make much of an impact in Australia, but its successor is becoming an increasingly popular member of the mid-sized SUV segment.
With handsome styling, a seven-year warranty and the rare-for-this-segment options of a hybrid powertrain and a coupe SUV body style, it’s not hard to see the appeal of the GWM Haval H6 even if the brand may still be unfamiliar to many Australian punters.
It’s even more popular in its home market of China, where in 2021 it was the best-selling SUV overall.
All prices are drive-away.
GWM Haval Australia says stocks of both the H6 and H6 GT are “healthy” and that a customer “should in most cases be able to take close-to-immediate delivery”.
The current-generation H6 launched locally in 2021, with the hybrid and GT ‘coupe SUV’ joining the range in 2022.
Although Chinese brands tend to work on faster life cycles than the broader industry, the H6 has plenty of life left in it yet.
The GWM Haval H6 is currently available in Australia with two powertrains.
A turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine is standard in the wagon and GT body styles, and produces 150kW of power and 320Nm of torque.
It’s mated with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and either front- or all-wheel drive.
The H6 Hybrid is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine teamed with a two-speed 130kW electric motor, a 1.8kWh battery pack and a two-speed ‘Direct Hybrid Transmission’.
Total system outputs are 179kW of power and 530Nm of torque. The Hybrid is front-wheel drive-only.
The GWM Haval H6 line-up – including the H6 Hybrid and H6 GT – has a five-star ANCAP safety rating with a 2022 date stamp.
The H6 received an adult occupant protection score of 90 per cent, a child occupant protection score of 88 per cent, a vulnerable road user protection score of 73 per cent, and a safety assist score of 81 per cent.
All models come standard with the following safety features:
Rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and front parking sensors are available higher up in the range.
The H6 is available in the following colours:
The GWM Haval H6 wagon measures 1886mm wide, 1724mm tall, and 4653mm long with a 2738mm wheelbase.
The GWM Haval H6 GT measures 4727mm long, 1940mm wide and 1729mm tall, on an identical 2738mm wheelbase.
With the rear seats upright, the Haval H6 has a boot capacity of 600L. This expands to 1485L with the rear seats folded down.
The H6 GT has 392L of luggage space, expanding to 1390L with the rear seats folded.
The Premium comes standard with the following equipment:
Lux models add:
The Ultra is available with either front- or all-wheel drive and turbo or hybrid powertrains and adds:
The GWM Haval H6 and H6 GT both seat five occupants.
The back seat is a comfortable place to sit. There’s plenty of room in every dimension – someone 180cm tall can even sit in the middle seat and have headroom to spare, even on models with the panoramic sunroof.
The GT may have a sleeker roofline but there’s still plenty of headroom in it, too. Legroom is ample with both body styles, while the floor is nice and flat.
Child seats can be positioned using one of the three top-tether anchor points or the ISOFIX anchor points on each outboard seat.
Below the ‘floating’ centre console up front, you’ll find a large, flat storage area. More storage can be found in the front doors, which feature cutouts large enough to accommodate a 1L bottle. The centre console bin is well-sized and opens with the press of a button.
In terms of second-row amenities, there are two USB-A outlets, a fold-down armrest with two cupholders, and rear air vents. The storage cutouts in the doors, however, lack a proper cutout for bottles like in most rivals.
The GWM Haval H6 range is covered by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.
After its first service at 12 months or 10,000km, the GWM Haval H6 requires servicing every 12 months or 15,000km.
The first five services are capped at $210, $280, $380, $480 and $210 in front-wheel drive models and $210, $280, $480, $580 and $210 in all-wheel drive models.
The GWM Haval H6 battles not only models from rival challenger brands like the MG HS and SsangYong Korando, but also members of the mid-sized SUV establishment like the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan X-Trail and Toyota RAV4, among myriad others.
To the end of October 2022, GWM Haval Australia has sold 5169 examples of the H6 wagon and 1195 H6 GTs for a total of 6364 sales overall.
That puts it below the MG HS (9097), which also hails from China, but above established nameplates like the Ford Escape (1837 sales), Nissan X-Trail (6534 sales as it transitions to a new model), Renault Koleos (2297 sales) and Volkswagen Tiguan (2097 sales).
It also puts it narrowly behind the Honda CR-V (6835 sales) and Subaru Forester (7836 sales).
