The final piece in the Volkswagen Group’s four-model entry-level electric vehicle (EV) puzzle has been named the Volkswagen ID.2X, and it’s expected to slot in as a successor to the T-Cross small SUV.
Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer quietly confirmed the name of the new electric SUV in a LinkedIn post, and announced it would be revealed at this year’s Munich motor show in September.
It comes after the German brand previewed its Polo-sized ID.2, and the ID.2X is set to be a higher-riding alternative to this – much like the relationship between the current combustion-powered T-Cross and Polo.

The ID.2 and ID.2X will share their MEB Entry platform with the upcoming Cupra Raval and Skoda Epiq, which have already been teased in concept form. These vehicles will be built in Spain.
Autocar reports the ID.2X will launch in 2026, with the ID.2 entering production in 2027 with a starting price under €25,000 (~A$41,000).
Based on the difference in price between the Volkswagen Polo and ID.2, Autocar estimates the incoming ID.2X could therefore be priced at roughly €30,000 (~A$49,000).
If those are too expensive, Volkswagen is targeting a circa-€20,000 (~$33,000) price tag for an upcoming electric hatch which it’ll preview on March 5 with the ID.Every 1 concept.
These EVs are intended to go up against affordable rivals from China along with new European options like the Citroen e-C3.
The ID.2X will reportedly share no clear aesthetic similarities with the ID.4 and ID.5 as Volkswagen rolls out a new design language for its EVs.
Autocar reports it’ll be powered by a single front-mounted electric motor producing 177kW, which will be fed by batteries of either 38kWh or 56kWh capacity for a maximum range of roughly 450km.
It’ll reportedly measure 4.1 metres long, ride atop a 2600mm wheelbase, and offer more than 490 litres of boot space.
The ID.2X’s interior will also reportedly feature a 12.9-inch infotainment display and 10.9-inch digital instrument cluster, along with physical controls for its audio and climate systems.
In a bid to improve material quality while reducing environmental impact, Volkswagen intends to remove all glue and hard plastics from the interiors of its next-generation vehicles.
The ID.2, ID.2X, Skoda Epiq and Cupra Raval form the Electric Urban Car Family, and will help the Volkswagen Group fend off increased competition – and at a critical time, too, given the Group’s profits and market share have recently taken a hit.
The company is cutting costs, and in Europe it plans to cut more than 35,000 jobs by 2030.
Writing in his LinkedIn post, Mr Schäfer says he is optimistic about the Volkswagen Group’s path ahead as a result of the Electric Urban Car Family – “even though the overall conditions in 2025 will remain difficult”.
“With this joint project, the Brand Group Core is truly bringing its power to the road. We’re on the right track – and now we’re stepping it up a gear,” he wrote.
