Volkswagen Australia has detailed an extensive product rollout for the coming 12 months, which will include the launch of the all-electric ID.4 and ID.5 SUVs from December 2024.

    While a late-2024 launch was the most recently confirmed timing, Volkswagen’s local arm has slightly adjusted its rollout plans – the ID.4 Pro and ID.5 GTX will kick things off in December, with the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 Pro set to arrive Down Under around the middle of 2025.

    That’s a little different to the initial rollout plans, which was meant to see both Pro RWD and GTX AWD versions of the ID.4 and ID.5 arrive around the same time.

    Volkswagen Australia has confirmed local-spec vehicles are now in production and will soon be heading to our shores. Pricing is still to be confirmed, though the brand assures it’ll “certainly be cross-comparable”.

    It’s understood the ID.4 Pro should be aimed pretty squarely at the Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD, which is priced from $69,900 plus on-road costs.

    What we already know

    The ID.4 Pro features a rear-mounted electric motor producing 210kW and 545Nm, with a claimed 0-100km/h time of 6.7 seconds.

    An 82kWh lithium-ion battery pack (77kWh usable) offers up to 544 kilometres of WLTP-certified range, and can be charged at a rate of up to 135kW via a DC fast charger.

    Meanwhile, the ID.5 GTX gets a dual-motor electric drive system with system outputs of 250kW and 679Nm, cutting the 0-100km/h time to 5.4 seconds.

    Claimed range for the Volkswagen ID.5 GTX according to WLTP testing is 528 kilometres from the same 77kWh (net) battery. It’s worth noting the GTX ups DC charging capacity to 175kW.

    The ID.4 GTX and ID.5 Pro effectively mirror the specs of their equivalents, though WLTP figures show the coupe-styled ID.5 ekes out about 10-15km more driving range.

    ID.4 + ID.5 GTX add:

    • 20-inch Ystad alloy wheels
    • Sports seats with integrated headrests
    • Harman Kardon premium sound system

    A heat pump will be available as an optional extra across both variants, while a range of premium paint finishes will also be available as cost options.

    In addition to the belated arrival of the ID.4 and ID.5 twins – which have been delayed numerous times after being initially promised in 2023 – Volkswagen will also launch the all-electric ID.Buzz MPV and ID.Buzz Cargo van.

    From there, the German brand’s EV expansion will continue with the ID.Buzz GTX dual-motor performance variant during the second quarter of 2024, with the aforementioned ID.4 GTX and ID.5 Pro landing mid-2025.

    Volkswagen Australia also confirmed the next-generation Transporter range will be headed Down Under during the third quarter of 2025, which will be offered with an EV powertrain alongside ICE and PHEV options.
