Volkswagen Australia will release a limited-run version of the Amarok ute to commemorate its latest successful world record attempt.

Driven by German endurance driver and multiple record holder Rainer Zietlow, his co-driver Marius Biela and Australia’s Brad Bowman, a modified Amarok V6 Style set a new record time for crossing Australia’s 10 deserts – six days and 17 hours.

Starting in Maree, South Australia, the record attempt saw the three-man crew travel across the Great Victoria, Great Sandy, Tanami, Simpson, Gibson, Little Sandy, Strzelecki, Sturt Stony, Tirari and Pedirka deserts, arriving in Alice Springs 6421km later.

The Amarok used 1199 litres of diesel in the process – averaging 18.7L/100km – and suffered a single tyre puncture.

With the Guinness World Record in the bag, Volkswagen has announced it’ll release the Amarok 10 Deserts Limited Edition in 2025, honouring its unique place in history.

While the record was achieved in a V6 variant of the Amarok, the circa 300 examples of the 10 Deserts will be based on the bi-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder Amarok Life, which produces 154kW and 500Nm.

Volkswagen Australia has not released pricing or specifications for the Amarok 10 Deserts Limited Edition, although the Life it’s based on starts at $59,490 before on-road costs.

Volkswagen has now picked up two Guinness World Records in Australia this year, after a standard ID.4 GTX electric SUV established the record for the largest GPS drawing made by an electric vehicle (EV), inscribing “70 Year VeeDub” across 23,849km.
