When you think of motorhomes, you probably think of confused travellers crawling along in the left lane.

    However, one tourist in New South Wales has challenged those preconceptions after he was caught allegedly travelling at 153km/h – 43km/h over the speed limit.

    Police officers from the Riverina Highway Patrol Wagga Wagga sighted the Fiat motorhome allegedly speeding along the Hume Highway in Tumblong on Monday afternoon, and pulled the rental vehicle over.

    A 23-year-old man from the UK was behind the wheel, with three other passengers also in the vehicle. The driver tested negative to both drugs and alcohol, but was issued with a $1097 infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 30km/h.

    His driving privileges in Australia were also suspended for three months, putting a halt on his grand travel plans.

    Four-berth Fiat Ducato motorhomes are powered by a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine producing 134kW. While official figures are hard to come by, it’s safe to assume the top speed of this house on wheels couldn’t be far north of the 153km/h hit by this motorist.
