Keen to get your hands on the Toyota GR Yaris? You’d best start scouring the classifieds, because Toyota still hasn’t confirmed when it’ll be back on sale.
The brand this morning confirmed it has “no update” on when the pint-sized GR Yaris will once again be available to order, having taken it off sale in July 2021.
At the time, it said it was negotiating for more supply of the car from head office in Japan, and confirmed it hoped to “announce a recommencement of order taking for this much loved vehicle soon”.
The Toyota Australia website doesn’t offer an “order” option or drive-away pricing for the GR Yaris, instead telling customers to “contact a dealer”.
Toyota has been battling tight supply across its range in Australia. The company has previously apologised to customers for the long wait times afflicting its most popular models.
It quotes lead times of up to 24 months on cars like the RAV4 Hybrid, Camry Hybrid, and LandCruiser 300.
The GR Yaris is built at a small factory in Motomachi on a dedicated production line, and is a lower-volume car than any of its range mates.
Although the smallest GR product is facing an uncertain future locally, its bigger GR Corolla brother is locked and loaded for Australia.
Both the regular GR Corolla and the two-seat Morizo Edition have been confirmed for our market, with first arrivals of the former scheduled for the back end of 2022.
When it touches down, it’ll join the GR Supra and upcoming GR86 in the local performance range.
The GR Corolla packs a 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine with 220kW of power and 370Nm of torque. That’s some serious punch from such a small power plant.
