Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) has fully revealed its GR GT3 concept at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon.

Previously teased and leaked, the GR GT3 has a classic race car silhouette with a long bonnet, a swept-back and steeply-raked rear window, and a large rear spoiler.

There’s also a very low front spoiler, bonnet vents, a side-exit exhaust, centre-lock wheels, a full-width rear light bar, and a humongous rear diffuser.

There’s no real link between the styling of the GR GT3 concept and the existing GR range, which includes the GR Yaris, the LandCruiser GR Sport, GR Supra, GR 86, and the C-HR GR Sport.

Toyota says it’s a racing car designed to demonstrate “the knowledge and refined technologies Toyota Gazoo Racing has gained in the field of motorsports”.

TGR intends to use the feedback from the GR GT3 concept and its motorsport technologies to develop both GT3 and “motorsports-bred” mass-production cars in the future.

It’s likely the GR GT3 concept previews a new entry for GT3 racing, given TGR currently races a Lexus RC F with no strong link to the GR Sport brand.

Powering the RC F GT3 racer is a 5.4-litre V8 engine producing more than 367kW of power, mated to a six-speed sequential transmission.

Running a heavily-modified RCF V8 is also out of keeping with recently-announced plans to transform Lexus into an electric-only brand by 2035.

Along with the GR GT3 concept, Toyota has unveiled the hotter, Japanese-only GRMN Yaris at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon.

Limited to 500 units, the GRMN Yaris has been “fully tuned” with enhanced body rigidity, a 20kg weight reduction, 10mm width increase, 10mm height reduction, mechanical limited-slip differentials, and a close-ratio manual.

Toyota says the GR Yaris “has evolved into a car that can be driver faster with more peace of mind, with improved braking force, grip, cornering and following performance based on feedback from professional drivers”.

The GRMN Yaris is also available with limited edition Circuit and Rally Packages that bring a load of other goodies.

Special Toyota dealers in Japan will start begin selling the GRMN Yaris in the Japanese summer (June to August 2022).

Toyota also revealed the all-electric bZ4X GR Sport concept at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon, as well as the NX plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Offroad concept and hydrogen-powered ROV buggy concept.
