Toyota is recalling 1285 examples of its 2022-2023 Toyota Corolla Cross due to an issue with the electronic park brake which may cause the vehicle to roll away if not put in Park.
“There is a possibility that the brake actuator assembly may falsely detect an overcurrent condition of the electronic parking brake (EPB) actuator and enter a failsafe mode,” says the brand in its recall notice.
“This mode illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), displays the message ‘Parking Brake Malfunction, Visit Your Dealer’ on the multi-information display (MID), and prevents the EPB from being engaged or disengaged.
“If the EPB cannot be engaged, and the EPB MIL and MID warnings are ignored, and the vehicle is parked on an incline or decline without being placed into ‘Park’, then the vehicle could roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.”
The issue doesn’t affect hybrid models. Toyota says they use a different control program as their brake electronic control unit manufacturer is different.

Toyota says it will contact customers via SMS to arrange a free repair, so if you’re a Toyota owner you should ensure your contact details are up-to-date.
The update of the EPB software will take approximately an hour, but Toyota warns you may need to make your vehicle available for a longer period of time depending on your dealer’s work schedule.
You can continue to drive your vehicle, however Toyota advises you carefully check the EPB is engaged when parking your vehicle – if it’s functioning properly, no error message should appear, and the MIL shouldn’t be illuminated.
