Toyota has introduced a “partially improved” Corolla Cross in Japan, which could preview upcoming changes for Australian models.

Key updates for the Japanese domestic market include revised powertrains, updated safety and assistance systems, as well as upgraded infotainment technology. New colours are now available in Japan too.

Corolla Cross models with the 1.8-litre hybrid drivetrain not offered in Australia, but offered locally in the related Corolla Hatch and Sedan, gets updated “electric modules” to “achieve low fuel consumption and high output” – likely meaning the Corolla Cross is getting the more powerful 103kW drivetrain recently given to the standard Corolla.

Japanese-market Corolla Cross petrol versions swap out the outgoing 1.8L petrol engine for a 2.0L ‘Dynamic Force’ unit that is likely a version of the 126kW/202Nm motor already offered in Australia.

Proactive Driving Assist and Pre-Crash Safety systems have been added to the Toyota Safety Sense suite of active safety and driver assistance systems – neither of which appear to be available on Australian models currently.

The former “supports the driver’s steering and braking operations”, while the latter “detects oncoming vehicles when turning right at intersections and pedestrians crossing from the opposite direction when turning left or right at intersections”.

A new-for-Japan 10.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with connected navigation is now available, as is an in-car Wi-Fi module.

The high-spec Corolla Cross Z grade in Japan now gets the 12.3-inch TFT digital instrument cluster as standard.

Finally, a new ‘Massive Gray’ exterior paint is new for the Japanese market, while three additional two-tone combinations join the palette.

CarExpert has contacted Toyota Australia regarding updates for the Australian market, and is awaiting a response.
